My Son in law just bought a barely used Vanguard in 300 Wby.
It is ejecting the last cartridge out, rather than feeding it into the chamber. The first two rounds feed perfectly.
My initial thought was that the magazine spring was weak, I compared the spring pressure to the spring in my Mk V and couldn't really feel a difference. Appreciate any input.

Thanks:confused:

The best advice I can give you is to take it with some shells to an experienced gunsmith for an inspection.

Feeding problems

.
When a cartridge is to be loaded from a magazine, the spring pushes the magazine follower and cartridges up. There is something to stop the cartridges from just pushing up all the way, and out of the rifle. This could be lips on a magazine, or stops on a receiver. I am not really too familiar with the Vanguard, but if the magazine has a curved lip on both sides, then one of these could be bent or mis-shapen. This would not allow the cartridge to feed at the proper angle.

Also, when several cartridges are in a magazine, the magazine spring pressure is greater, and this forces the cartridges together a bit harder. On the last round, this spring tension is greatly reduced, and there are no other cartridges to "jam" against the last cartridge.

Question here: Is the magazine follower in the correct way?

Question 2: Many magazines have Z shaped springs. They are designed to lift the magazine platform to give proper angles for feeding. If they are reversed..front to back....this gives an improper pressure on the wrong part of the follower. Have you checked this?

I know that with Model 700's the culprit of that problem is metal magazine well. If it is too wide or narrowed too much then the round will leave the well too soon or early. Usually if the round is leaving too early (popping out) then the mag well is too wide, the little lips on it that hold the round tight down on the magazine follower are too wide and need to be narrowed.
