A bit of story on this buck. I passed him up last year as he was a bit young and passed him up again early in the day as I was looking for a bigger one my brother and I saw the day before. There was about an hour left when we spotted him again but he looked funny so I put the spotting scope on him and his left rear leg was hanging by a thread from the knee down so I decided to take him. He kept moving away slowly as we approached as he was in an open field so I decided to take a shot I would never take on an unwounded animal. This summer my brother and I set up a long range target to play with not expecting to take any animals at that range. I went into a supported prone and at 509 yards I took him down. I would have passed had he not been wounded . He dressed out fine with no meat loss.

I hate to see them suffer and go to waste knowing the coyotes will gang up later on and give an ugly death, plus I like venison a lot.

Done the same thing a couple years back with an Elk. Not going to yap about as that distracts folks from your good deed, but I tried a shot that I normally would never dream of and put the Elk down STAT.
It is a good feeling isn't it?
Gives you bragging rights about a long shot...but a long shot with a conscience. Most long shot stories end up with 1/2 of the actual hunters giving the storyteller the side-eye..."Umm yeah, how about those local ( insert team here)?"
