Since the Milsurp forum seems to be a "catch-all" for anything Milsurp-y...
I dug these "Feldstecher" (Field-glasses) binoculars out of the big box of stuff I scrounged from my Grandfather's desk after he passed away. This is pretty much the only bit of kit I can't quite put my finger on...
I know they were manufactured after 1899 and before 1905 - I found a rather dense paper on how to date these.
I know the Brits had issue Field Glasses of their own - And that these aren't it.
The tricky bit is the name and address of one of G.D.'s distant relatives and "The Black Watch" scratched into the end caps. Fellow's name was Captain (family thinks so anyway
) William C. Hay.
British issue? Captured German issue? Or just a pair of old binos with WWI graffiti scratched in the end caps?
My camera just isn't up to getting the scratches. It looks like it would have been quite legible when it was done, but we all know how cloudy black enamel paint can get.
