just a litle past that speck on the horizon
If some one had have told me at my age I would see and handle a rifle for the first time, and get all excited like a young pup chasing a skirt, I would have laughed and said not me son.
I have had in my hands an original Sharps Old reliable in 45/2.4. Now i'm a little ways past middle age but that 130 years plus piece of history made me feel just great. So now I know i will never be able to afford an original, but methinks if I sell off enough of my goodies in the gun locker or trade my way into one. Maybe i can't find the fountain of youth, but i can sure feel that way.
 
There are a few original Sharps around. I have an original M1878 Borchardt in the safe in .45-2 1/10" or .45/70Gov. I agree that there is a great feeling of nostalgia in looking at that original "Old Reliable" stamp on the barrel. Good luck on your trading, but you won't be getting mine!
 
I am rather partial to this one. It wasn't cheap but was affordable and only needed a few repairs.

Not really sure but seemed to be along career. It was made as a carbine in the recent unpleasantness south of the border then in 1878 sent back to the factory and rebarreled and rebreached to a cartridge rifle in probably 45-70. At some point the stock and upper tang was broken through the wrist and the tang was brazed with a gusset plate back together, the gusset inlet into the stock. Sometime following that it must taken a tremendous spill which broke the tumbler, the top off the hammer and the link between breach and lever. Then it must have left in a damp barn for a long time causing lots of pitting and the bore became severely rusted. Other than those minor imperfections it was in good condition :>)
I repaired the broken parts and restocked it plus sleeved it to 50-70 with an 1870's vintage rolling block barrel. Top of the hammer needs to be redone but the rest came out reasonably well and it is reasonably accurate and fun to shoot
