the big advantage of 3F in any muzzle loader is the reduced fouling. When you get up into the larger calibers, say over .60, the 2 F becomes more desireable because it generates less pressure and/or a slower pressure peak.
I find the biggest reason for using the coarser granulations is because the same charge weight takes up a greater volume which is a bonus for those large cavernous cases like the 577 Snider and the 577-450 Martini Henry. Helps fill the cavity so that filler is not required. Interesting comment about the possibilty that the finer grades produce better groups. I have often wondered if that was the case from my experience.
The theory that I put into that the finer powder does not get hung up on both the fouling and rifling on it's way down. Thus more consistand amount of powder per shot. But that MAY only work for us ML's.
