I found my old message link with Rick from SMGGuns (http://smgguns.com/), it might explain the situation better. I forgot that he made semi-auto Bren Guns and seeing that Bren Gun mags are high capacity mags that are Grandfathered (see below), maybe this would motivate a Canadian importer to commit to a large import making export worthwhile for Rick!!!! I am sure that some semi-auto Inglis Bren Guns would sell pretty quick north of the border. I wouldn't mind a semi-auto DP28 either!
Canadian Mag Regulation Exceptions:
(c) is of the “drum” type, is not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for use in a firearm commonly known as
(i) the .303 in. Lewis Mark 1 machine-gun, or any variant or modified version of it, including the Lewis Mark 1*, Mark 2, Mark 2*, Mark 3, Mark 4, Lewis SS and .30 in. Savage-Lewis,
(ii) the .303 in. Vickers Mark 1 machine-gun, or any variant or modified version of it, including the Mark 1*, Mark 2, Mark 2*, Mark 3, Mark 4, Mark 4B, Mark 5, Mark 6, Mark 6* and Mark 7, or
(iii) the Bren Light machine-gun, or any variant or modified version of it, including the Mark 1, Mark 2, Mark 2/1, Mark 3 and Mark 4;
Rick's guns are not always 100% correct. He worries more about function and practicality. For example, with his FG42 he decided to use ZB mags and MAS bayonets. Both are military quality and look the part, but are not 100% identical to the original FG42. He makes firearms that are shooters versus simply collectors pieces and those two steps reduced costs. Heck, his $5000 FG is more affordable and more reliable than SSD's FG42 which sold for $9000 originally.
SSD FG42's are almost identical to the originals, but they are very costly and function is not always extremely reliable. Their FG identical mags sold for a few hundred dollars vs. ZB mags which can be purchased for $40-70. SSD is also a four letter word right now as they are being liquidated yet again and because of a recent RCMP ruling.
See the link below for more info on the import/export restriction.
Hi agentcq,
Thank you for your understanding - I hate the way some things are but much of it is beyond our control. If we are ever able to deal with these issues and you are still interested we would be proud to build what you like.
Best regards,
Rick

But, honestly...thank you for the kind response and I am glad to see things going so well.

My other option is to order a type II from SSD, but it is twice the price and it would be nice to actually shoot the rifle.
Cheers

The fee we have to pay to export is astronomical and once we start paying it - yearly - it has to be paid every year as long as we are in business whether we export or not!
I would love to sell you a rifle but we can't afford the tax as a business right now.
