Thought I'd share this recent video about English driven bird shooting from one of my favourite YT channels, yet it's one I seem to forget about for months at a time. Anyway, it shows how the British do what seems to be 99% of their game shooting, some nice over-unders, and some nice ladies too, does it all in the first 7.5 minutes of the program

Nice short video. I have to say, the British style of shooting looks like it would be a fun thing to try.

The last two shoot day films that young Jonny posted are really outstanding and show the shoots in far more detail that this clip did..

Ah the driven birds
I remember beating on a couple of shoots.
One in particular was fun with all the hooty tooties
With their Range Rovers and Purdy’s
Some of them couldn’t shoot worth a 5hit
Funny as hell.

One shoot put down 110,000 birds including ducks.
Hard work some days but fun

Re the top video:

1): Jon is a much uglier brute than my nice young women as seen in the OP.
2): What on earth possessed him to wear those dark glasses in the gloom and the fog? He doesn't appear to have had pink eye for instance.
3): When the rubber hit the road and on what I'm sure was the wild game experience of a lifetime, I notice old Jon went to a side-by-side, despite his basically being a purveyor of over/unders.
4): It was very interesting to see now field management is being done to raise the most valuable UK crop of all, meaning wild birds.
5): Standing in one spot while the birds are driven to you would be great for an old guy like me, but....
6): No thank you, just give me a gun and let me loose in those fields.

Edit: Re the second video.

1): Clouds of birds!
2): Jon was shooting top barrel first, setting all conventions on end. And was paying to be there, ditto.
3): Jon rarely makes a bad video, thank you Big Ugly for posting those.

Gotta love the Brits….. “it’s all about the birds” lol

Hey Falc:

Have you guys ever put together a "pseudo driven shoot" using traps?

There is a British gentleman who owns a pile of Laportes, and I believe you know him as well" who says you can set up a reasonably interesting facsimile for fun shooting.

Apparently, the boys in Britain usually set up the stands during the colder months when the hard core shooting season is at it's lowest.

Just wondering.

Cheers.

A nice English lady once told me that's done in England but I put it down to her misunderstanding how a pheasant drive works.

We've never done it but it's an interesting idea and with a bit of effort I think we could pull it off. We do have a hill to work with and some machines that can throw quite a distance. We also have the duck tower with two machines in it that would simulate driven birds but they just won't be really high up.

- I cannot argue the point
2): What on earth possessed him to wear those dark glasses in the gloom and the fog? He doesn't appear to have had pink eye for instance.
- Jonny has a relationship with Ed Solomons, who is a co-owner of Edwards Eyeware. I believe the lenses of those glasses are tailored to certain lighting conditions. I believe that those have a slight red tint which aids with depth perception and detail in flat light. He recently had an assessment by Ed Lyons which diagnosed a slight correction that needed to be made which is the reason for the glasses. They're definitely more than just a pair of sunglasses.
3): When the rubber hit the road and on what I'm sure was the wild game experience of a lifetime, I notice old Jon went to a side-by-side, despite his basically being a purveyor of over/unders.
- I asked him about that and he said that he started with the 28 ga O/U but switched to the 12 ga SxS part way through the day.

- 100%.
5): Standing in one spot while the birds are driven to you would be great for an old guy like me, but....
- He and Simon did a walking style hunt film not too long ago. My old chassis might have a few too many miles on it for trekking those hills like they did. I mean, I'd still try it out, btu I'd also like to try a driven shoot as well.
6): No thank you, just give me a gun and let me loose in those fields.
- My knees hurt just thinking about how close together those contour lines are!

The difference that I noticed between the Fieldsports film and the TGS film is that I don't remember seeing any birds shot on camera during the Fieldsports film. Lots of shots heard, but always as a background noise, not in relation to seeing a bird hit. That is where young SAsha earns his paycheque...amazing camera work capturing the whole thing from swing to impact. Not that Fieldsports was bad, just different.

I had glasses of that sort of tint a few years back designed for shooting. They actually lite everything up and made my sight much clearer and sharper. So they definitely aren’t a hindrance. Even in lower lighting conditions. In response to Big Reds comment on Jonny’s glasses.
