Hey everyone,

My friend has had his license for a few years and I'm just taking the classes in a few weeks.

Heres the problem though, I cant figure out which side i prefer to shoot from. When i do the thumb test to figure out my dominant eye i get my left eye, however in most things I'm right handed (occasionally ambidextrous).

Shooting left feels more natural, however using a bolt action feels more comfortable with my right. So i end up getting shells going past my face. :bangHead:

My friend says you can get left handed guns but that they are harder to find, I was wondering what you guys think of my hand/eye situation as well as buying a rifle when it comes to left or right.

thanks

If i were you, I would train myself to be right handed. The vast majority of guns on the market are made for right handed people, and most all sighting systems are made for right handed users. For a price, anything can be made custom, but be prepared to fork over wads of cash. I too was a left handed shooter (with left handed gun), but the whole setup was very awkward and unnatural. Scope adjustment was especially difficult.

I'm a left handed lady who decided to shoot right handed because it's easier to get right handed guns and I just got lucky that my dominant eye is right as well.I have been spending more time learning to shoot left handed lately because I'm hoping it will be an advantage one day doing weak hand for IPSC and multi gun but it still feels a little odd.

Some people can effectively shoot both sided. I am right side dominate, but can operate a firearm left handed effectively as well. I find that I can hold a bit steadier left handed, however my aiming takes a bit more effort.

It should depends on your goals. If all you want is to go out and do some plinking and go out to hunt with some buddys, then go right handed. if you plan on doing some serious competition then its worth going with your dominant eye and buy the equipment you will require accordingly ie a left handed rifle.

Cheers,

Thanks for the input everyone, i figure it's probably a better idea to buy a righty gun and then i can work on my right side but shoot left if i wish i suppose.
