I want to know what to do with the slot where the rear sight is on the 10/22 after i knock it out of there. Is there any blanks available to simulate the smooth curve of the barrel or do you have to make one?

There are filler pieces available. They do fill the slot but they also protrude a bit on both sides so they don't actually hide the slot, just make it look less unfinished.

I've never tried it but it has occurred to me that I could likely do better with JB Weld touched up with black paint.

Find an old rear sight with the proper sized dove tail
and grind down to suit your needs.
A bit of bluing or paint and voila.......................

There's lots of aftermarket dovetail fillers out there. I got the one for my Marlin from Skinner Sights and I've seen Lyman fillers at Wholesale Sports. If you want it to match the contour of the barrel you'll be doing some custom work though. I think the standard fillers from most places look just fine. Check your local gun shops or you can buy them online. I think Andy's filler was $7.
