Who uses what to fill up their cases when loading? I have heard folks talk of 'Dacron" but that stuff is not really around these days and I suspect they are using something else. I wonder what folks are using that's easy to get and doesn't gum things up?
Thanks.

"...that stuff is not really around these days..." It's used to stuff home-made pillows. Any fabric shop will have it. Any of that kind of thing will do though. A lot of shooters use 'Cream of Wheat'. Mind you, the load you're using matters whether or not you really need to use a filler.

Have been useing cotton batting for about 10 years ...and several years ago went to close-celled foam to take up the amost one inch of air space in my favorite plinker load of 500 gr. Lee GC and 24.0 gr. A2400 at 1320 fps with consistantMOA groups or less.

Close celled foam can be purchased:

1. " Crack stuffer" Caulk backer rod.. 20 foot long rolls at Home Depot ..used for caulking around bath Tubs.. $5.00

2. Auto upholstry shops .. by the foot x 3 feet wide..price varies.

3. Any place that sells those blue sleeping mats that back packers use.

..works great in all straight walled cases where you don't want small powder loads to migrate.

X2 on the 'Backer rod' and glad you put me on to it a while ago.:) Prior to that I used the cotton ball material but the backer rod is a great improvement. I passed that info on to H4831.
All I've been able to find locally was the rod in 5/8" diameter so in some applications, I've had to 'modify' it diameter wise, until H4831 sent me some 1/2" diameter and that's the cats meow.

Hi Johnn, and thanks again for the original sample of the material. It was at a smaller building supplies dealer that I found it, ½ inch in a bulk roll for nine cents a foot!
Two very accurate loads I have found with it, 1¼ to 1½ inch, 100 meter groups, was 22.5 grains of 4227, and 25.7 grains of Hercules 2400. That first load is very light, but the second one is up a bit, a good, light plinking load.

PS, The bullets were 420 grain. Both gas check and flat base shot the same.

What do you use for bottleneck cases like 43 Mauser?
Rich
I've never used a filler in a bottleneck case, but if I was going to, I'd probably go back to the cotton ball fragments. Also, that would all depend on how much the reduction in diameter is between the main body of the case and the neck. Say for example with a case configuration like a 460Weatherby or a 375 H&H, I woud be tempted to go with the backer rod. In a 30-06, probably the cotton ball material, but then again, I've never had that opportunity or need, yet.;)

The only bottleneck case I've used fillers in is my .416 Rem Mag. to keep the 45 grains of IMR4198 from roaming whilst under a 365 gr. RCBS GC cast. For all intents this .416 is basically like a .458 mag... quite straight.. only with the addition of the short .416 neck.
Others may have had success with fillers in the traditional hunting caliber bottle neck cases but haven't personaly with out some pressure spikes being evident.

For bottle neck cases and other mild loads in straight walls ... have become a convert to IMR Trailboss powders in past year....fills my cases to about 68% capacity which is where velocity and accuracy max out and no fillers are needed.

:)I'll use that as a reminder and have just put IMR Trailboss powder on my shopping list @ P&d this July.
