Hi all, I was wondering, if I filled up the pits on a old musket barrel with weld from a wire feed welding machine and then draw filed it smooth
=would this be a good fix??

What would the cons be with regard to doing this??

Thanks for any help and information given!

I just hate seeing a otherwise fine and functional arm covered in those unsightly pits.

I don't see anything wrong with what you did outside of collector's value.

I used to have an old copy of a gun collectors digest, where a gunsmith restored an old C96 Broomhandle Mauser.

It was very badly pitted, so he removed the blueing, put tiny little welds on each pit (like you did) then milled and sanded them all down to spec.

After some final detail work, he had the pistol hot blued and it looked incredible.

Stupidly, I gave that book away to the New West Public Library as a donation. When I went looking for it a few years later it had mysteriously vanished.

It could be made to look shiney.
Any collector appeal would be gone.
Depending on what gun is is, there could be substantial loss of value.
