Went out at dawn today with a buddy. As soon as I started calling, a Fox came charging in. Lucky for him we were after coyote so we let him run around us a bit and then from the sidelines comes a little coyote! We wait till he is within 100m, and i whisper to my friend to "take him". He fires, the Coyote does one spin around, and runs off. "weird!"

He's quickly gaining distance from us and my buddy has been having trouble with his shooting past 100m with his 30-06 so I was up.

So he's running away and limping a bit, but not falling over like a badly wounded coyote might be, he's running now 250m - 300m left to right moving away from us. I quickly go prone while making Kiyi calls and then lead the coyote by placing the crosshairs at his nose as he's running right and away. Bang - Flop. Shot hit him right in the chest.

After inspecting him, we found that my buddy's round had actually richocheted off the ice of the lake and clipped his foot! Thus why he kept on running! I'm glad my shot hit him because the poor guy wouldn't have had much fun with no pad on his hind foot.

My first coyote. He's small but at least I finally got one! lol

Really? By his friend's own assessment he can't shoot at 100 yards and beyond, and shot into the ice in front of the dog with a cartridge that even at 2-300 hundred yards drops only a handful of inches. Before he goes shooting feet off more animals he should leave the shooting to the OP, and you two disagree eh? I miss, for sure including recently on a wolf, just not in a statistically likely fashion where friends would say that.

Good Job Boyz!!
Get out there and get a few more when you can.
Thanks for posting the picture and the story...
Maybe next time leave the bit about missing or blame it on a sudden gust of wind that changed the bullets direction
so the drama that is unfolding maybe left for others to worry about.
Again, Good Job to the Two of You.

Ardent is correct.... To aim for the boiler and hit the foot is pretty bad.... Its the "living things" part that rings true... Sealhunter got it right as sell... He needs to work the call etc so he doesnt become a giggly schoolgirl when something shows.....

That being said, excellent job op

Your buddy needs to learn to shoot before shooting at living things, I'm afraid.

Once again instead of offering a congratulations on a first kill one of the CGN Elite Armchair Sniper Team points out somebody else's unfortunate happening. Must be something to have never missed a shot or wounded something.please PM me with the costs and dates you have available for your shooting seminars?

To the OP, congratulations!! It is a cool feeling to get your first predator. Way to go, keep at them! And tell your buddy not to get discouraged. I have seen many shooters over the years who could shoot groups to envy and always make clean kills have their share of off days too!

Can't get experience shooting at living creatures by not shooting at living creatures.

Carry on, congratulations and don't mind the pope and his bishops! ;)

We all have missed at one point or another, ones that say they haven't are either lying , have hunted very little or don't actually shoot at game at all.The OP could have omitted the part about the poor shot but then would have been telling half truths.

He has a Remington 770 30-06 that is fairly new. It came with a crappy stock scope which is likely a 70 dollar scope for one. He has been having a hell of a time zeroing it, and from what I can tell when we took him out to zero last time he has to work on marksmanship principles. Breathing, trigger manipulation etc. To make matters worse, he has a plastic sling swivel stud which means he can't put a bipod on there for fear of it snapping off. Bad choice of gun all around for pred hunting, but sadly because he doesn't have alot of money he is using what he has. He doesn't have the luxury of owning a Mint Rem 700 PSS from the 90's like me :)

He'll get there. We zeroed him at 100m within about 2 MOA today. Pretty decent for him. Way better than 2 feet at 100m anyways. He'll improve with time for sure.

With that said I did that rockstar shot on the move this morning and felt great then I went to the range and put 40 rnds through my rifle and I was ALL OVER THE PLACE. I had a terrible day at the range! As the spank said it happens!

Now to wash all my hunting gear. Sigh. Anyone know how to sanitize boots? I really don't want mange.

Never been referred to / elected to armchair status, onwards and upwards in Internet life. :) You'll have to wait on the seminars I'm afraid, busy hunting sheep overseas and I'm not sure about my public speaking ability anyhow. But if there's shoulder patches... I'm game.

Now, you do realise I'm saying longarm21 should do the shooting, the poster, don't you?
