Finally an m14 in the stable

I haven't seen one brand new out of the box in a long time. I like those short barreled M14s. None of mine have a bayonet lug. The quality of machining looks very good in that photo.

What is interesting about the lugless (bayonet) versions is that the piston can be quickly and easily removed for cleaning; without that bayonet lug there to interfere with that removal. If you have a bayonet lug on your shorty barrel and you want to remove that piston:

* Remove / unscrew gas plug
* Undo gas cylinder lock
* slide entire gas cylinder assembly forward and turn to 3 or 9 o'clock position or sideways
* gas piston easily falls forward into your hands.

Just don't drop that piston on a cement shop floor... :eek:

Ask me how I know.... :cool:

Cheers,
Barney

Congrats, every :canadaFlag:CGNer:canadaFlag: should own at least one Norinco M-14.

P.S. If you get tired of the black stock, get a can of olive drab Krylon Fusion, it makes for a very purposeful look to the platform, and very cheap change. Black to me is more tacticool, best left for AR's and fighting shotguns, again just my preference, enjoy her as she landed!!

I have a nice stash of flat cammo colors 6 or 7 different hues I will post after she is all cammo

On this one I just had to turn the gas lock out of the way and there was just enough room to pull the piston out

I cleaned mine up on the weekend. Stripped of gunk, the finish is very even and dark. At first blush, the fit and finish are miles better than on my circa-2004 Longy* M305. Gas nut indexed at 5 o'clock and had to be tapped home. Barrel indexing looks ok. Castle nut is immovable....and yes the set screw was removed. I actually snapped a pair of Brownels M14 pliers trying to remove the nut. No worries, I'll deal with that later.

This gun (or at least mine) is quite tight compared to my original. When I dropped the bolt on an empty chamber.....it pinged! I'm going to change the op-spring guide for a solid and slap an M14.ca RD mount and then shoot the heck out of it. Maybe an Armtac adapter and new brake down the road.

* opposite of "shorty?" :p

My rifle is like said above except the gas lock is tight at about 7 o'clock small shim I guess , the rifle has the ping sound when fired but not as loud as Hungary's in the funkers vid the flash hider is defently welded on , I haven't tried to remove it but that's the next task I have the SEI adapter and a Griffen flash comp to put on

Congrats. Now the fun begins. Nice to see someone say something nice about the new shorty. They seem to have been getting slammed a lot on here.
Your gonna have to tell us how she shoots and holds up :))
Have fun :)

Is the flash hider welded or can you simply remove it with set screw removal/castle nut pliers?

Mine was welded, had a real hard time getting it off. Two spot welds on the bottom. Didn't have anything decent to get the castle nut off, nearly lost my mind in the attempt, but succeeded.

So ... What is the trick with these uber tight castle nuts?
I ground a set of small v- grips and removed set screw but the v- grips were to whimpy I'm guessing some liquid wrench over night and a stronger set of v-grips might be the trick ?

I picked one up on sale last month for $399.99 Ordered it over the phone, had it 2 days later. (in the mail) It had a couple of small issues, safety could not engage, had to remove almost a 16" from the hammer hook, and about half that from the trigger block. Smoothed up the sears with an Arkansas stone, and lapped the charging handle to the action; lapped bolt lugs for a good fit, sat down and shot 3" group with Federal 150gr. after sighting it in. GREAT gun for the money. Took longer to clean all the cosmoline off than it did to do the tinkering. Mine is NOT the shorty version; I like the longer barreled variety.:)
