Finally decided on a rem 597

I like both

I have been having an enourmous amount of issues with my most recent 597. I get many FTE's with both the stock rem as well as the eagle mags. Tweaked the guide rails to no effect. Time for some VQ parts I guess.

I picked up some Remington 30 rounders and headed to the range today to see how they shot. They seem to work better when loaded with 25 rounds instead of 30, but I guess they will break in with time. One mag loads into the mag-well smoothly. The other takes a bit of pushing. Again, with a little tweaking, I'm sure it will turn out fine.

I was actually surprised at the weight and the durability of the magazines. Judging from the photos they looked like they would snap by just handling them. They actually feel well constructed. Time will tell.

Also, my 597 LOVED the Federal Auto Match bulks that I was trying out as well. I shot about 200 rounds and not a SINGLE FTF or FTE was had with these rounds (with the factory 10 round mags), and they are rediculously accurate. I was getting repeatable ragged hole groups, under one inch, from the 50m point. At 100m the groups spread out to about two inches, but to be fair I was shooting at the 100m point later in the day and it was windy and I was cold...

Those and the CCI Blazers work and shoot very well in these rifles.

Give them a try.

OK, I spent most of last week stateside, so I only had a couple of hours Friday to try her out. The night before I bought a bi-pod and installed a swivel stud for it.

Although Grey isn't my favorite color, I like the shape, feel of the stock. The scope that was included is a little small, but appears solid, not like the no-name stuff you find on ebay. I was able to quickly adjust and get her zeroed in.

The trigger was a bit odd at first. Felt mushy and "plasticky" and it like I was pinching it more than squeezing. But seemed to improve after a few rounds. Might need some breaking in.

The 30rd mag is definitely tougher than it looks. I noticed when I was loading it that the first 15 rounds went in easy, but I couldn't get past 25 without really forcing hard. I hope its going to smooth out after some use, or I might just trim the spring.

I had rushed to get the range so didn't have much ammo to test her out. Ammo used was "Remington Target Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 40 Grain Lead Round Nose". I put about 150+ rounds through her. For now I can't seem to group better than 1.5 inches at 50yrds indoors, but like I said, I still need to try out other ammo brands. I had no FTF, no ejection problems, worked fine right out of the box.
