Finally found a shottie for my girlfriend

I have been looking for a while for a good gun for my girl to use. We have shot a bunch of clays with the 12 gauge and the .410. She can shoot the 12, but it is a little heavy for her to hold after a while, and the recoil is more than she is comfortable with, and the 410 is a breeze to shoot, but tough to hit anything with and it is only a single shot.

After some searching, I found an Akkar CY600 in 28 gauge. 22" barrel, 12.5" LOP and about 5.5 lbs. Plus it is a semi, so between that and the gauge I bet this will be virtually no recoil.

Got it in today, and I was pretty happy with it. $539 plus tax, light plastic stock, but that is pretty standard these days. Overall fit and finish is nice, breaks down and reassembles quickly. Very similar to my Baikal mechanically. It seems like it is going to be a blast to shoot, I may have to borrow this for a little grouse hunting!

"...410 is a breeze to shoot, but..." That's why it's considered to be an expert's gun.
"...28 gauge..." Not exactly easy to find that ammo. A 20 guage would be better.
 
Screw the criticism of the gauge, the barrel length and how the OP describes the gun. His girlfriend is out shooting, another woman has taken up the sport. Excellent news and worth a thumbs up. The rest of it is just internet noise.

Ya, it will be interesting to see how it shoots with the short barrel, but she was having a problem with the longer shotgun being too barrel heavy and tiring her front arm out quickly. I was thinking a 26" first, but though I would give this a try. I would rather have something that is extra forgiving just to get her into shooting, then work up to something that swings better and is cheaper to feed.

If a shotgun doesn't fit, the gauge doesn't really matter. If it fits, the gauge doesn't matter all that much either. The gun that I most often shoot skeet with is a 28 gauge, and I shoot it about as well as my 12 gauge skeet gun. I break as many clays with my 410, as I do if I pick up a 12 gauge that doesn't fit me as well.

As mentioned the 28 is not cheap to buy factory shells for. If you are shooting target loads, there are members posting in the EE looking for 28 gauge Winchester AAHS hulls. Might help offset the cost of shooting that gun.

While that gun may not be the best target gun, kudos to you for getting your GF out shooting. And I applaud trying to get her something that doesn't beat her up. Bruised shoulders and cheeks have caused too many novices to give up the sport without giving it a real chance.

Ya I do take the exception.

I'm sure your gal will shot it great. My wife uses my little O/U .410 and she smokes every clay thrown, makes me look bad!

Good thing she only shoots once or twice a year!

Good advice, thanks. Picked up some shells this weekend and the price wasn't too bad. Winchester AA for $12.60 a box. I can live with that.
 
Just got back from the range and this gun functioned great and was a gas to shoot. Went through about 5 boxes of shells, no jams or feeding problems. Certainly didn't swing as well as a 28" barrel but it wasn't bad at all. Most importantly, my girl loved it. Fit her well, minimal recoil. Out of the 5 boxes I only got to shoot about a box and a half. :)

I tell guys this all the time, if you want to have a lady continue to shoot with you buy her something that she wants and fits her. For me that involved buying a Winchester model 120 Youth. A pet peeve of mine is seeing guys hand girlfriends and wives 12Ga guns that don't fit. You are setting them up for failure...
