Just wanted to post a comment here in case anyone is having trouble with their new-ish Marlin 39A. To note, mine is a serial number 913**** manufactured in 2009.

My rifle new had lots of fail-to-extract, fail-to-eject and fail-to-fires with it. I found a lot of misinfo on what were the causes and what should be the fixes online. Most people were recommending putting extra washers behind the hammer spring. That DID NOT work.

What was causing it the FTE/FTE + FTF were two things:

1) The "cartridge guide spring" hung to far down causing extraction problems. I had to take it out and give it a bit more flex to it using a screw driver, pliars and filed a very small lip off of it. That took care of the extraction problems.

2) I had to file down the lower arm of the "hammer rod" 1/8" that allows the trigger to sit in the half-cocked position. The hammer now bypasses the half cocked position allowing a full strike of the hammer without interruption. I can see a very large difference in the strikes the cartridge is receiving.

I am not a gunsmith and I am not encouraging anyone to modify their firearms or void their warranty. I am just saying that this worked for me. My rifle now extracts, ejects and fires all bulk .22LR ammo I feed it 100% of the time. I am now happy with my rifle and feel that it is a quality gun. It just needed some work to get there from what it was out of the box.
