Finally got my WW game sorted out.

So, finding WW where I am isn't much of a problem, but availability on any one day can be hit or miss with the competition from fishing and decoy weight casters, and the independent junk dealers that scrounge them. I rarely pay more than a round of coffee for buckets of them, but doing the rounds of the tire shops to get a bucket or two gets old fast.

Finally it hit me to go to one of the shops and ask who picks them up. It's an old gent with a truck that gets them for free. So, I called him and said I'll give you a few cents over the scrapyard price, and save you having to haul them a few hours. It also neatly solves my problem of disposing of zinc and steel weights after sorting...

I definitely don't mind paying .15/lb or so if it means a steady and near limitless source that I don't have to spend a day driving around for.

Straight lead I'm fixed for three lifetimes, there's enough derelict sailboats with lead keels around here to make bullets for all of China. The only cost is the chainsaw blades =)

Which is the worse job?
Sorting through wheel weights, or smelting them & scooping off the dross?
Hmmmm.....

Good question. One is more tedious and takes longer, one is much more hazardous to your health. I dunno. Smelting I guess. A few beers and gun shows on YouTube and sorting isn't all that bad. Almost zen in a way.

I can get range scrap pretty easy but it's a heck of a mess to smelt. And now I've noticed someone has been shooting zinc bullets so I'm going to have to be really careful on the temperature control.

Need to find a good source of pure soft lead and wheel weights. Buying from the scrap yard seems expensive some days.

Zinc bullets hey? Hm. Have heard the rumours, never checked into it myself.

It's unfortunate that the best place to shoot and the cheapest source of shooting materials are a few thousand Km apart. Not many free sailboat keels in Alberta I suspect.

I have a couple of garages that keep their WW for me. Also I have two people that pick up a bucket or two when they get their tires changed. I found two boat kneels in the Bay of Fundy, one 1263 lbs of zinc and a second about 1800 lbs. Biggest problem was getting them on the truck. Floor jack and blocking, when it got high enough just push it into the truck box. The zinc went straight to the scrap yard for 0.64 a lb. The lead went into an aluminum smelter I had geared up from a large propane tank. I used just about everything for ingot moulds I could find. You just can't stop with 1800 lbs of melted lead. I learned to do much smaller melts. The aluminum smelter worked excellent but I didn't think it out all the way through. 200 lbs or less gives a good run. I use to run a scrap business and the smelter was used to melt aluminum and leave all steel parts on a rack.

LoL
No I haven't run into many scrapped sailboats. Between the big winds and small lakes they aren't too common.

Canada Ammo or someone was selling zinc 9mm slugs cheap 3k/ammo box at one point. Not sure if they are still around.
