With my usual pheasant hunting partner not able to get the time off, and another friends dog having kennel cough, I haven't had the opportunity to hunt pheasant this fall until today. With the kennel cough gone for a week, my friend asked me to join him for a morning at the Daysland release site. Things started out slow, but there were few hunters, so we were having a nice walk, and the dog was having a great time looking for birds. Then the old yellow lab found his first rooster, and the fun started. Unfortunately the rooster flushed between us, making a safe shot impossible until the bird was farther than I prefer to shoot. Then we heard a rooster cackling and the dog took off faster than we could keep up with him. The rooster flushed well before we got there, and we each took a shot, but the bird escaped. We hunted a while longer, and decided to head back to the truck to call it a morning. On our way back to the truck the dog found another rooster, but this time were were both in a good vshooting position. As the rooster flushed, we both fired, and the bird folded in the air with feathers flying in all directions. We didn't see many birds, and we did very little shooting, but both of us and the dog did enjoy ourselves, and I did get to christen my 20gauge AYA SxS on a pheasant. This was only the second time that I have hunted over a flushing dog, and although I do prefer hunting over a pointing dog, It was still a great way to spend a morning.

Anytime one gets to hunt over dogs it just adds to the day !
Not that it matters , but are these released birds or wild?
Read a story on another forum cou: and of course some where unhappy with the pressure on the birds do to some sort of successful
festival of sorts.
Anyways, the point is Thanks for sharing the days events.

Released birds. My partner is 74 with hip and knee replacements, and the yellow lab isn't young anymore, so we weren't in a hurry, were were just enjoying the morning, and watching his dog work. We did see other hunters, but hunting pressure was quite light. I am heading out Thursday with a breeder that has three pudelpointers, so I am expecting a very different type of hunt.

stubblejumper the story just gets better and better!
You forgot to mention those important details in the first post.
Gotta keep the ole boys from getting old and falling to pieces.
Not to mention to keep the old dog from getting long in the tooth too.
A day in the field is better than a comfy chair any day.
Best Regards,
Rob

Couldn't have said it any better. I have never hunted with dogs yet - though I really want to try it some day. I think that will only lead to me getting a pointer.....not such a bad thing.

Was talking with a fellow here yesterday who is 74 and very well known in the shooting circles. He was down to the south end of the province two weeks ago hunting wild birds right on the Montana border and said the birds were everywhere. Said the first day he could have limited out on roosters within a few feet of where they parked the truck. Said birds were flushing all around them as they were getting guns, gear and dogs ready to go.
Nice that you finally were able to make it out though. I know the waiting feeling. I missed the whole first month of waterfowl season due to work. Am on my last week of holidays and have had 4 hunts to this point with my buddies and have been having a blast!

I am headed to Saskatoon next Thursday to hunt waterfowl. In the meantime. I hope to get out for pheasant a few more times,

Sounds like you had a better time than me, I was out last weekend for the release and the only thing we found was feathers. We seemed to always be in the wrong field since shots would be in the field across from where we were and not once did we flush anything edible. It was a great weekend of hiking and everything else about hunting, but it would have been nice to get something edible out of it!

Were you hunting with a dog? If not, you can walk around for days, and never see a pheasant.
