Finally! My first matching german coded K98

That is an absolute gem!! I am very happy for you! Hold onto her, that's a whole lot of history you have there!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful addition with us:)

Not sure if Ill shoot it or not. Ive got a bolt mistmatch Id rather shoot, but I dont think I can never shoot it, Ill likely run a few rounds through it just to test it out.

Perhaps its best. Break something small like a firing pin or crack a matching screw and the 100% matching rifle will never be again... Especially if you already have one or more others. I get nervous shooting my Type 99 and it isnt even matching!

For the more experienced guys, how would you go about cleaning this? I figured some light solvents and an old tooth brush? I dont want to destroy the patina but alot of it is just crap and grime.

Yep, youre dead on artyman, cant undo anything.

Thats what I would do. If there is no rust present, I wouldnt "scrub" it sort of speak. A light cleaning with a generous amount of oil should keep it preserved and rust free for a long time. Be careful to leave the stock free of oils.

Is it just me, or has the stock & metal been varnished at some time? Wasn't the original German stocks oil finished? Nice find regardless.

For the metal, you may wish to try 0000 steel or bronze wool to remove the surface layer of grime while preserving the metal finish underneath. A good wipe with a shop towel afterwards to remove any bits of wool left over, and a final gun oil rub on with a shop towel as the last step.

Keep us posted how she cleans up :).

The brown on the metal had me wondering too, but its lke sticky grime kind of. Doesnt seem dry and hard like a varnish. Stock....maybe hard to say. If you look at the pic stickys at k98k forum the other byf42s have very dark walnut stocks.

Either way, ill clean it good tonight and post some more pics tomorrow.

Great find. i wouldn't touch anything on that rifle. if i wanted to, i would use Spray9 to get rid of the grease and any oil. water based degreaser that works on everything. :Di love it
