I took a day off yesterday and finally got around to shooting my M14. My son and I put about 20 rounds through it. I shoots fairly well, the 20/5 clip does not fit that great, might be just the one I have. I was using the peep sights that come with it, I need to put a scope on it fast! I found the trigger was a bit heavy, is there an easy way to tune it? These guns must have been a hand full in full auto!

your 20/5 rounder doesnt fit that great? do you mean the insertion or the fact that it has a little slop when fully locked? if its just a little difficult to insert it is probably the wood stock,i found this with my norc, the inside of the stock is pretty rough.i have replaced it with a big red birch stock now and the mag inserts very easy.

Yeah it does not go in that easy, once it is locked it is fine. I have a fiberglass stock I am going to install one of these days, that might cure it.

the real ones are all 12(3) converted auto- and we're patiently still waiting for marching orders-

The drag and resistence you are feeling is probably the true feeling of a new gun, just like new shoes. It is probably quite dry from where you cleaned it the night before ... More oil or grease will help, but if it really bothers you the next step is more drastic.

Strip out the trigger group and remove the moving parts. With an oil stone and patience, polish off any lingering parkerizing or tool marks from the SIDES of the parts. DO NOT file or polish or contemplate changing the sear and trigger let off surfaces. The idea is to reduce any friction between the moving parts and the insides of the trigger group.

The only other suggestion I have is to pack a lunch, put on your ear muffs, and blast your way through a few hundred rounds of ammo to work-in the trigger. (just be sure to clean the barrel about every 10 shots for the first 100)

was on the range today....shot my M14 with Norinco ammunition...
100, 200, 300, 400metres with open sight :)))
every shoot went to the silhoettes of the chickens, pigs and horns :))))
it was impressive :))))

Just curious why this is advised? I've never done this procedure of cleaning after every 10rds for the first 100. I've just blasted away and cleaned rifles after the shooting session is over.

Hey Pilgrim,

What did you think about the Norinco ammo?

Likely that will cure it. And if it doesn't, a Rooster33 op-spring guide would be the next thing to try.

barrel breakin

I've always believed that copper jacket material will be shaved off by the roughness of new barrels. Supposedly too much accumulation can cause rippling (or some other negative effect on smoothness). By removing the excess you will allow the bore to be burnished down. The rule of thumb was 10 good strokes with copper solvent per round for the first ten or fifteen, then back off to fewer strokes for longer stretches.

Now, there are as many opinions on barrel breakin as their are favourite brands of beer. This is my opinion; others will join in.

+10 ahead for Norinco :))) with Norinco 7.62 I can make 1 inch groups...
American Eagle goes up to 4inches at 100m...hunting 150rg Federals 3 inches at 200m....all these results were achived with open iron sight :)
Port ammo is not good for my M14s...but for other M14Norinco it can work much beter :)
just try different :)
