Finally shot the VZ58

One of the new members at our club brought in his VZ58 (nr), with some tacticool stock, running a dot on it. I think I would have preferred the original stock (and that's coming from a guy who was happy about crapcoing the SKS and is mostly shooting an AR now) as the quadrail handguard wasn't comfortable for gripping). Otherwise, I love how she handled and shot. Rock and load would take a bit of time to get used to, but I'd run this rifle in a match (once the 10rd mags come in) just for the fun of it. Would get a good brake and a trigger job first though.

They are quite good and fun, eats cheap surplus ammo too... AR15 has better irons and rail possibilities. Personally, the VZ58 is just a military type rifle with irons that I have fun with. Unsure how it would perform in any type of competition, as 5.56 is probably better suited. I've never liked the M4 or folding stock on my VZ, the original wood looks and feels better to me.

7.62x39 kicks harder which slows down the followup shots. While it can be mitigated by a comp within reason, in the end, the poodle shooters will win on that and quicker/easier mag changes.

Wood looks so much better on the VZ58 rifle (maybe I'm the minority though), many like the black rifle furniture on it, but I have many black rifles already. Like my 'red' VZ58...

I like wood on almost all my firearms (going to refinish the 20" 500 and fix the recoil pad that I put on half-assed on the 590A1)...

Your babies are lovely! I mainly focus on the utility value. A reasonably thin wood foregrip would be a lot easier to handle than a thick quadrail - hence my wood comment. Otherwise, only one of my guns has wood furniture and it's a rimfire rifle lol

I have a spare set of black polymer handguards if you are interested. Also working on a spare wood set.

Edit: oops, it was another member's rifle, not yours.

Don't own a VZ.. Wish I had bought one way back when, but in a few months I'll be moving to a country that doesn't allow semiauto centerfire rifles, so no point in getting one now. Will have to sell my AR, too :(

I have to agree with you, the beaver barf is actually a pretty good stock despite appearances. I've tried a couple 'black' after markets and the surplus metal paratrooper stock and the disgusting wood is still my favorite. I'd like to see one of those Maple Leaf sets that were around a while back though. Seems like a nice upgrade looks wise. (Edit: and I see you have one of those lovelies in your photos, looks great IMO)

I bought a bunch of sets of surplus wood and I am in the process of refinishing them, I'll have a set or two to throw on the EE probably. I sanded my beaver barf and stained it Ebony, then sold it to a guy on the EE as well. The VZ58 just feels well balanced with the initial real wood that they came with in the first couple years of production. Never liked the folding stock or the M4 on the VZ, but that's just me. The fixed buttstock feels the best, especially the real wood one. I've never seen the Maple Leaf edition up close but it looked very good in pictures.

Even though I never liked the folding stock, this FSN caught my eye - interesting wood furniture:

At the time when I bought mine all I could find were the M4 stock versions. I don't really like the look of it but I took what I could get. I swapped out the black handguard for a surplus CZ 858 one, changed to a bakelite AK grip, AK style slant brake and fitted it with an SVD mount POSP scope. Here it is along with some of my other eastern hemisphere toys.

I'd really like to find this style AK side folder for my VZ!

How much do you sell them for?

These sold out a few years ago without anymore brought in. Don't know, just on the used market now. Don't think many came into the country either.

Here's my VZ58 before pic:

After with real wood:

You said you will be selling a few on EE?

BTW, did you paint the receiver in some reddish color or it is just a photo effect? Looks like CZ-858, not CSA. Did it fall into prohib?

Beautiful! I'm a sucker for wood stocks, I guess I always remember the rifles my dad had when I was a little kid. All but one wore wooden furniture sets.

I have wood furniture sets I may sell on the EE. This is an FSN-01 which has a brownish/plum receiver. Marstar sold these for a little while and then never brought any more in.

Yes, the beauty of wood. It just looks and feels right on shotguns and the VZ58.
