Hey guys,

For those of you who enjoy pics of old Winchesters, I finally got some photos to post of the other 1894 ELW I recently picked up. Maybe some of you saw my post / pics of the other with the 22" barrel. Again, these photos aren't the best, I tried several times outside, but with poor results, so back inside I came. The gun looks much better than I can do with a camera, I think I need Win38-55 to give me a training course!

Anyway, a bit of info on the gun. I picked it up the same time as the 30WCF 22" Deluxe ELW with British Proofs that I recently posted about. This one is also a deluxe ELW, but what sets it apart is not a short barrel - too bad - but, it has beautiful wood, is a straight grip deluxe, and is in the venerable 38-55. I'm sure there out there, but I have not seen a lot of ELWs in 38-55.

Anyway, here is how it letters:

S/N applied on August 25, 1906
Type: Rifle
Caliber: 38/55
Barrel Type: Round
Extra Light
Trigger: Plain
Fancy Checkered
1/2 Magazine
Shotgun Butt Rubber
Takedown
Oil Finish
Rec'd in warehouse on September 20, 1906
Shipped from warehouse on September 21, 1906, Order number 71881.

The gun is in excellent condition. There is some flaking wear on the frame, otherwise the condition is really excellent. A lot of really nice CC left on the lever, some on hammer. Here are some photos:

What I like best about the gun is the wood. The fellow who picked this stock blank out of the bin really knew what he was looking for. Check the way the grain flows right around and back into the straight grip. Just don't see thought and workmanship like that these days. You can see the pride some of the old fellows put into these special guns back in the day. Some of them are true works of art.

And here is another photo of the 22" ELW that I got with it. Happy to have them both:

I am anxious to see how both shoot, and hopefully a future trip to Win 38-55's place and a trip to his range down the road will tell the tale!

No, there sure isn't much meat Mike. I'll have to get out the calipers and take a measurement for comparison to one of my standard barrel 38-55s. The first ELW rifles had their sights dovetailed into the barrels like the rest, until they realized how dangerous these might be and they started using ramp front sights on them. Earliest I think I have seen with the ramp front sight is 1899. Might not have been so bad on the 25-35, but like you said, with the 38-55, "not much meat" left at the end of the barrel.

With Matt dangling Winchesters like that in front of me, I might be a poor man for the rest of my life!

Matt, you must have one heck of a collection! I drool every time you post photos :D

Actually, my collection is not that large anymore. When I made the decision to try to collect higher condition 1894s, I knew my collection would shrink as I would have to sell some to upgrade, sometimes selling several to buy one, and there just aren't that many high condition ones around. They are few and far between. So, the collection is much smaller, but I am proud of it. Most I am bringing up now from the US. So many of our nice guns have gone South over the years, I am glad i can bring some up here for future generations of Canadians to enjoy.
