It has finally happened. I shot 25 straight for the first time in trap today. On a good day, I will break 22-23 with the occasional 24 thrown in just to razz me. After spending the morning shooting black powder rifle, I wandered over to the trap range for a quick round before heading home. I joined a group of novice shooters that was being instructed by a experienced club member. With nothing else on my mind, I just took my turn with no thoughts about breaking 25 straight. It was only when I took that last shot that it dawned on me that I finally got that elusive 25. Just for fun, I called for one more clay at the end and nailed that one as well.

It was a one of my better range days. Yes, I got my patch. :dancingbanana:

Thanks for the replies. Now if I can just keep my head glued to the stock and swing through, I should be able to repeat. Next goal, 50 straight. That is only two 25's in a row. Easy right? ;)

That's how its done, without thinking about it. Years ago an experienced shotgunner who watched me shoot 24 after 24 explained that the more I thought about hitting 25 straight the less likely it was going to happen. Don't shoot 25 targets he said, shoot 1 target 25 times. I went straight for the first time a couple weeks later.

When I mentioned a repeat performance, that is exactly what the trap chairman said to me as he handed me my patch.

When I first started out I had the privildge of belonging to a small club that had some VERY accomplished trap shooters. One in particular had a wealth of Grand American trophies. He used to say to me "it's me against that machine and I am not going to let that nachine beat me" and his other saying was "it's one out of one each time, don't count targets".

One method to not count targets is to have 5 more shells in than the round requires. If you've hit 24 that lone shell in your pocket puts more pressure on you than if you are not sure whether there's another station left.

I have done that as long as I can remember as one of the older fellows offered that advice when I was still a pup. I just grab an extra handful without counting them so I have no idea how many I started with. The silly little things we do?! When I shoot Federals I always make sure the duck on the brass headstamp is upright and flying level.....
And though I no longer reload I continue to never put an empty hull from a missed target back in my pocket or empty side of my shell pouch. I throw it on the ground. You don't reload "misses". ;)

Many years ago I shot trap at the Peel club in Brampton.
After many rounds of practice , I was getting close to 25 straight but it eluded me.

One day I went to the club & said today this it. Make or break.
I shot 4 rounds. 24 24 24 24 .
Sold the shotgun & gave up trap. I know my head was playing games with me
but it stopped being fun.

It's part of the mental game. I never look at the score card during a round and will use a heavier shell for the last target at a station if I'm running it. There's no practical logic to it but it helps the mental game.
