Finish on my 870 is crapping out!!!

Gah, I have only owned this shotgun since the 11th of October, and already I have some "bald" patches on my finish.

I have put some heavy shooting wear on it (1500-1700 shells or so now, not too sure).

Am I in any trouble here? This was suposed to be a camp shotgun. Should I just touch it up with a sillicone cloth to prevent rust? Or should I get it refinished and hope it lasts longer then the factory finish.

Just some background information, I am in Alberta, so humidity is almost null, but I do most of my camping in BC (hence my concern of rust).

Did you buy it from a dealer or a private sale?

If a Dealer then I'd take it to them and see if they will replace the parts...might be a one off defect...ie built on a Monday Morning, or a Friday Afternoon. :wink:
 
Where are the bald spots on your finish? If they are where the slide moves on the mag tube , then you just wore it off with the equivilate of 10 to 20 years of duck hunting in 22 DAYS.

Yes, I bought it brand new from the Wholesale I work at.

Yep, its not Blued, its parkerized. I would have much rather had bluing just do to the fact none of my blued firearms have worn that fast.

Where are the bald spots on your finish? If they are where the slide moves on the mag tube , then you just wore it off with the equivilate of 10 to 20 years of duck hunting in 22 DAYS.

There is wear there, along with the end of my magazine tube (Im guessing this is just from storage?) The part of the barrel that goes inside the reciver is basically naked steel now, and there is an odd wear spot on top of the reciver (no idea why, Im guessing just from travel in the soft case?). And basically an inch back from the muzzle, there is a big siver spot, right behind the bead sight, once again, I have no idea why it is worn like that.

I do take good care of my firearms, I clean them after every shoot, and each has its own soft/hard case.

Its just kinda bothering me that their "Camp" shotgun has worn so fast, and considering I have basically done all my shooting indoors (with the exception of a pumpkin shoot yesterday). I am almost scared to see what happens to the factory finish when I take it outdoors with me.

Solution for me was to send it off to Barret Arms and have it coated with Arma-Coat. Voilà, no more problems.

Can I get a link or some more information about this place? Also a Location, I dont really want to mail my shotgun outside of Alberta, as I would rather support the local buisnesses.
 
Bare spots on the metal after less than a month is not normal.

Unless you're beating the crap out of it and throwing it around in the dirt, the finish should last MUCH longer. I've never owned a parkerized gun, but my 30 year old 870 has more rounds and MUCH less wear than yours. Something is wrong.

If you work at Wholesale, why not bring it back? Is there a no return policy for employees? Less than 30 days is RIDICULOUS for that much wear. There must be a problem with the park job.

Im pretty sure there is a "no returns" policy for firearms period, I could be wrong though.

Im honestly not that worried, I knew I was going to wear the factory finish off, I was just darn surprised it happened this fast (considering how much I baby my guns)

Now, I have gotten breakfree CLP and possibly some Hoppes 9 on the finish (from my vigorus cleanings). Could this be a contributing factor to the premature wear?

Other then that, I am just looking for a local alternative for re-finishing. Anyone in the Calgary area recommend someone who can do a good job?
 
You're taking the damage to your gun pretty well, if you ask me. The employee discount must be GOOOOD! :wink:

Hoppes no9 on the finish should be no problem. I almost bathe my guns in it, and never had any bluing or finish wear from using it.

If you wanna refinish it, you could always buy some KG GunKote from TSE and apply it yourself. Should go right over a clean parkerized surface. Pretty easy, and a huge bottle costs around $40, and it's enough to do about 8 large rifles.

The other option is to send it to that guy on here who does Arma-coat or whatever it's called.
 
The bottom line is that you get what you pay for!!!! If you would pay a few extra dollars and get the Wingmaster you would have nothing to complain about!! You are not alone as many people on these forums think that they are dollars ahead with buying bottom of the line guns and expecting top of the line performance and top of the line looks! Sorry, it does not work that way with shotguns, maybe coffee pots, but not shotguns!!! Pay the few extra dollars and you will have a great gun that will last beyond you!!!!!
