Finish on old 10/22 flaking off - how to refinish?

On an older Ruger 10/22, maybe from the early '70s, the finish is flaking off the receiver. A patch maybe an inch square. Am I better off refinishing the entire receiver, or can just that section be done? And can I do it myself?

I didn't want to be the one to answer this. But the 1022 receiver is made of aluminum so you can strip it with a chemical stripper and then polish it then I would think you would have to prime it and then paint it whatever color you like.
If I was in your shoes I would leave it be or make it into a high polish or strip and spray it with some ez liner which is a thin truck bed liner which leaves you with a shiny bumpy finish. It will stick to pretty much anything. I'm sure you would like somebody else was a better suggestion.

good luck trying to find a company or person to anodize it in Winnipeg. I've been looking all summer, I'm in need of doing my 10/22 receiver & barrel.
I might end up using Cerakote or Duracoat But anodizing is my first choice.

but if you want to off load that receiver for cheap I'm interested.

if your doing it for sentimental value then id call around and find a anodizer and have it done proper, keep in mind its gonna cost ya some money.
if your just looking to clean up a old gun then you could go a couple routes like mentioned above.
the cheapest and fastest way would of course be to get some Kryon and paint it any color or pattern you want.
the step up and what i would probably do in your position would be to either send it to Arma-coat in Edmonton or buy one of their kits.
they also do hot oxide as well which is a option as well.
there are a couple guys around that do Cerakote, never had it done myself but i think its $$ to have someone do it for ya, you can like the Arma-coat buy kits to do it yourself.

birchwood casey makes an aluminum black chemical the only trouble is that its very thin, but it may be like bluing and need a few coats? or applications rather as its not a paint its a chemical

I'm still looking for Anodizing But... if I can't find it done right the way I'm looking for then my second option is Cerakote Burnt bronze on my Magnum Research 10/22

A stainless 10/22 I have (bought it new about 7 years ago) has started to peel the first time I used a spray bore cleaner on it (G96), especially inside the receiver where the cleaner was sprayed/leaked from the bore. Big silver flakes started coming off, which lead me to believe that the receiver "finish" is nothing more than cheap paint sprayed on at the Ruger factory. I just ripped off the flakes coming off and haven't used G96 on it since (oil/light solvent only). Removing that layer of paint from inside the receiver actually loosened up the mechanism a bit, allowing for better cycling... so that was definitely a plus and compensated for the cosmetic loss!

If need be, I'd "restore" it with the same stuff... give it a few shots of Tremclad paint and you're done! No need to go all out on something this basic, as the professional refinish could cost you more than the rifle is worth. Also, I'd definitely leave the inside of that aluminum receiver stripped of all extra substance (paint, anodizing, etc) for better cycling.

;)
