Finishing an action and barrel

I'm going to be putting together a rifle based on a Savage action and a stainless barrel. What are my options as far as getting them done to match? What is the typical cost and turn around time? Who offers this service? Thanks in advance.
 
You can bead blast, just plug the barrel with ear plugs. Fine glass beads
Or you could sand it in a lathe to any finish you like from scratchy dull to almost chrome.
Shipping isn't cheap. Can you find a body shop or any shop with glass beads? I do them but it isn't feasible if a guy has to pay shipping.
 
You can buy KG guncoat or similar and spray it yourself, or send it to someone like Alberta Tactical Rifle to do it for your.

Or, you could just paint it with Krylon or bar-b-q paint. I often use bar-b-q paint on prototype parts or stuff that is going to take a beating and get scratched up anyway.
 
Is KG Guncoat hard to work with? Is Cerakote better in the long run? Is there anyone you know of and could recommend for the Cerakote?
 
Cerakote is nasty stuff, you need a respirator. I suppose you should have one with just about everything but with Cerakote, you'll WANT a respirator.
Arma-Cote works, bake it with a UV lamp.

I wouldn't even bother. It will shoot the same, whether your shoes match your shirt or not...:p
 
If you are going to use a paint type finish do not use glass beads to blast it with..or silica sand for that matter. Glass beads will leave the surface looking like a golf ball. Silica sand won't leave it rough enough.
120 grit aluminum oxide at 40 psi works great and is recommended by the makers of gun kote.

Gunkote is simple to use simply spray it on and then toss it in the oven and bake.
If you warm the gun up first with a heat gun it helps dry the gunkote and then the oven cures it.
I did a p17 with a 26" barrel a few years ago it turned out great but I had to take all the racks out of the oven and the door was open a crack but it still cured.
 
whats the best product to use if you DONT have access to blasting? I dont have an air brush but have an air compressor and might pick up an air brush in the future.

I am hearing of a lot of products:
Dura coat / arma coat
Kg gun coat
cerakote
cold blue
hot blue
alumna hyde II
teflon coating

etc

so many options! whats the best?????????

The only way to make any of these products last is to sandblast................it is a must do operation if you want to do it right. We sell portable blasters that use Silica sand and work outdoors that do a great job. For example in our shop we blast everything right down to the white metal removing any old finish that may contaminate the new one, then parkerize all parts, then apply Arma-Coat over top giving it a perfect new surface to bond to. We will be at the Easter show in Calgary next weekend come and check out the demos. I have a rifle that has been coated and used for the last 8 years and still looks perfect.
 
Murdoc, I thought I read somewhere that you were using matte clear over bluing? Do you just degrease and apply or do you do a light blasting?
