Been on a Mosin sniper rifle hunt as of late and was wondering if any Finn snipers are in Canada?I have every variant now except for the Finns, and I'm thinking they will be next to impossible to find..I have not seen one,..anyone else??

- There are fake/repro PU sniper's rifles set-up on Finn marked 91/30 that were done by Century Arms formerly of Montreal, QC in late 1980's.

- I also saw another fake PU one mounted on a Finn M-28/30 at an Ontario Gunshow once.

- Never seen a real one in Canada, but I did get to handle two real ones in the USA, with Warner/Swasey WW1 box type scopes mounted on M39 rifles a few years ago, price was around $4,000.00 to $5,000.00 if I remember.

I remember reading that the Finns experimented with German and Russian scopes and found the Russian ones to fit their rifles better in the pre-winter war years.

I think the Finns fitted a few of their short rifles but only a handful were done or remained in service with scope attached as the cost was prohibitive.

Someone more versed in Finnish military rifle history please correct me if I am wrong.

seen a rifle at milarm about 13 years ago .hex reciever ,SA stamp ,missing the scope and mount .but drilled and taped in the right places. and it was before all the fake mounts came out.

Century when they made their Fake/Repro ones used original PU Russian Scopes and Mounts, because at that time they were fairly common on the open market.

They were done circa 1990, so most are sitting in someones safe and only appear when a collection is broken up.

Signs to watch for:

- mismatched scopes to the rifle

- PU scope mounted on 91/30 Hex receiver

- Finally SA marking on receiver.

reminds me of the M44 with the bayo ground off (roughly) and scoped being passed off as a sniper at a gun show.

Few years back there was a repro M39 sniper done up with with a supposedly authentic PEM or PE scope and mount sold at a Canadian dealer. I was tempted to buy but waited too long to make up my mind and it was sold.

Collectors Source had an M39 sniper that was apparently done up with an experimental Finnish scope in the 1950s not that long ago. Like within the last year. Didn't last long.

Finn sniper rifles are among some of the rarest rifles in the world...

Following WW2, Finland had 206x captured M91/30 sniper rifles in store...

Only 11x M28 sniper rifles were assembled before the Winter War.

25x M33 (scoped M28-30) sniper rifles were set up in 1933.

27x M27 PH sniper rifles were in store after the war - leftovers from a batch of 150 made prior to June 1940..

122x M39 SOV (M39 with captured Soviet PE or PEM scope attached) sniper rifles were in store after the war.

193x M39 PH sniper rifles in store in 1951.

300x M39/43 Sniper rifles assembled prior to September 1944

20x M39/44 sniper rifles delivered prior to the end of the Continuation War, with another 30x after the war.

Most Finn sniper rifles remain in Finland...

I've got an M39 SOV copy with a Ukraine built PE scope on it. Its a great collectors piece, however it really highlights the futility of Finland in the war, as its an awkward piece to work with, generally speaking. Smashing looks, bent golf club feel. Wouldn't trade it for anything though, with that sort of character.

Come to think of it, the scoped M28/76 isn't a heck of a lot better for ergonomics. Its long eye relief optic requirement is a pain on its own. With open sights, however, it really purrs.

I think the Finn's made a lasting immpression on Stalin as between 750,000-1,000,000 Soviet troops never came home after the 105 day war.Hard to explian that one away.......Harold
