Anyone else here had surprisingly good results with the Fiocchi Exacta .308 Match ammo as of late? I just tried some 168gr and 180gr loads head-to-head against Hornady Supreme Match and Federal Gold Medal Match and was blown away by the results. My CADEX Guardian with 20" Bartlein barrel preferred the 168 gr Fiocchi, printing consistent sub-MOA 5-round clusters. My LMT MWS with 20" STAINLESS match 5R 11.5 twist barrel preferred the 180gr Fiocchi, with 5-round groups averaging MOA or thereabouts. The Fiocchi groups were consistently smaller than those produced by the other, "more estabished" brands of match ammo. I liked it so much that I ordered up 14 more boxes of the 180gr load from Western Metal. Don't tell the Wife!!f

For the price you are likely paying for 14 boxes of "around MOA ammo", you could buy yourself a nice press and start making your own sub-MOA ammo.

I have no doubt the poor grouping results are me. It is difficult to get prone-like results from a wheelchair using a tripod. But I digress...

My point, seemingly lost on the Lapua salesmen, is that for ME, out of MY rifles, the Fiocchi out shot what I had always believed was the superior ammo. I happen to have some Lapa 167 Scenars that I (now regrettably) purchased from "you guessed it," which I will try head to head during my next range session. At which point I will form my own judgement regarding the almighty Lapua.

Thanks for the free critique of my shooting tho. Absolutely invaluable.

I actually have a nice press that I use for pumping out pistol-calibre ammo when I have the time over the winter. Personally however, I find the case prep and hand-weighing of loads required for handloading precision ammo to be far too tedious and time consuming. Could I hand-roll better than commercial grade ammo? No doubt. But it bores me to tears, so I choose not to spend my time doing something I do not enjoy. I make enough money that the convenience of commercially-loaded Match ammo is worth it to me. That's all it is - a conscious decision to value my time over the cost of the ammo. Besides which, I have an amazing collection of Match brass for my troubles...

Is the brass good for reloading?

Bartok5, do you have any info on quality of Fiocchi brass? I have friends new to the shooting game who don't reload (yet) and I like to steer them to good ammo to get started with. Accuracy as you describe would make them delighted. I like to know whether it's good brass to save.

thanks for your report!

Hi bigbear,

I'm sorry to say that I don't know the answer to your question, as I have never reloaded the Fiocchi Match Brass. I bought it to try because it was new to me and was reasonably priced compared to the Federal Gold Medal Match and Hornady Superformance ammo that I usually pay for. Your question might get a better response if you ask it in the Ammo forum, which is probably where I should have posted this thread in the first place. Hopefully the brass is decent for reloading, as the factory loads were more accurate for me than those two established brands. Best of luck!

Good on you Bartok5 to be shooting considering your constraints! I admire your perseverance and determination. The most important thing is to have passions and enjoy life. We all need something to keep the fire in us going... Cheers!

Bartok5, you did not define the parameters of your testing. A few days ago we were dealing and demonstrating ammo to many top international snipers in Gagetown and last Sunday helped a man who cannot shoot prone and introduced him to 100m shooting benches and offered to set him up with a portable bench so he can shoot longrange with us.

We encourage and sponsor all types of shooting.

Good luck!

Peter

I am glad to hear that you encourage all forms of precision shooting. Call me thin-skinned, but I wasn't feeling that same "encouragement" with your earlier comment likening my group sizes to a "shotgun". I must have missed the emoticon that would have denoted a comment in jest...

Not sure what your point is regarding your particpation in Vendor Day at the CISC, but whatever. I too have rubbed shoulders with sniper greatness. Ask Rob Furlong who his company commander was in A'stan back in 02 when he made his record-setting shot. Sadly, my professional relationship with snipers over the years has done little to improve my personal shooting skills. My knowledge and appreciation for the sniper's broader craft are well-developed, but my own precision shooting skills? Not so much....

Nice that you helped out the cripple with a portable bench. That is actually commendable behaviour and as a fellow disabled shooter I applaud that.

Not sure what my "testing parameters" have to do with my direct comparison of 3 different brands of ammo. Aĺl groups were fired under the same, repeatable conditions, so what does it matter that I was shooting seated off a PRST tripod / HOG Saddle combo? The entire point of my post was the surprisingly strong performance of the Fiocchi Match .308 as directly compared to the better known and pricier North American offerings. That's it, that's all.

Mark c..where did you buy the ammo at? I would like to try some.

Western Metal Inc, a site sponsor. They are based out of Calgary (I believe), which is why I tried them - cheap (er) shipping to Edmonton. That said, if you order over $300 CAD then shipping via CANPAR is free. I've dealt with most of the site sponsors who focus on ammo sales and all of my dealings to date have been trouble-free. We are fortunate to have access to such great vendors, and I dare say they are equally lucky to have us as customers!

Thanks for mentioning parameters so we can better understand.

The fellow we helped was not a "cripple"" as this word is despicable - why do you use this? He is a person with joint and breathing issues.

Regardless, we do not generally recommend factory ammunition for best results, but encourage reloading and started our business for this purpose.

We mentioned snipers and talked to Rob on Friday and should also mention biathlon and Paralympics as shooting that we support - actually there is no shooting that we do not support. Please consider saving your brass and reloading.

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

I use the term because I find that it immediately brings to mind my condition ( legless, above the knees) and those in similar circumstances, to the uninitiated. Does it have a certain amount of "shock value"? Perhaps. But like it or not, so does my condition the first time most folks see me, thanks to the particularly visible nature of my most apparent disability. Despicable though? I don't happen to think so, and I am one. Perhaps we simply hail from different times, places, and sensitivities, you and I. Now, if you were to refer to someone visibly disabled as "a waste of skin/rations" or as "an oxygen thief" we would have angry words. But "cripple" offends you? Well then I apologize and won't use the term again in this conversation. But don't doubt for a second that it remains a term in circulation within our societal lexicon. I've heard it enough to know that is true. It is what it is... no point in taking offence.

Regards,

Mark C

PS - I save all of my match brass. I have milk cartons full of once-fired Hornady, Federal, and (now) Fiocchi .308 Match. Perhaps I will reload when life slows down, but for now I value my time more for other pursuits. Like shooting!

Bartok5,
Did you sustain your injuries while in service? If so, I thank you for your sacrifice.
If not, I thank you for continuing your enjoyment of the shooting sports and not succumbing to the woe is me scenario so common these days. I also commend you for being capable of shooting MOA groups. I am fairly competent with handguns and RDS equipped rifles but, no chance in He!! that I can shoot 1MOA with any rifle from a bench!! I just don't see that well anymore these days!
