fire forming 30-06 into 35 whelen IMP

I shoot a 375 wHelen Improved.
I expand the neck to 375, then load about 10 grains of Unique into LC-69 30/06 cases and push the case neck into a bar of wax or soap, breaking off a plug to seal the powder in the case. Squeeze the case mouth between your fingers or LIGHTLY with a set of pliers to make the mouth very slightly oval shaped. What this does is make a bit of friction when you chamber the case, keeping it tight against the bolt face. This is VERY important to do, otherwise the case can move forward in the chamber, expand upon firing, THEN push back against the bolt face. This stretches the case, weakening it.

If that 35 Whelen Improved chamber is cut properly, you should feel a bit of resistance as you close the bolt on a new 30-06 case. If so, it is easy to do. Take 15 grains of Bullseye, and put it in the bottom of a primed case. Fill the case with Cream of Wheat [Yes the common breakfast cereal, but uncooked of course] Put a wad of Toilet paper or other tissue in the mouth of the case to hold it all together. After you have so charged all your cases, take them out with your rifle to a safe, legal spot, and fire them. You should have perfect 35W Improved cases to load and use. And, no wear to your throat or barrel. Remember to clean your rifle before shooting any loaded rounds through it. Regards, Eagleye.

35 whelen IMP

I had tried the above method but using oatmeal many yrs ago and had forgotten what powder I had used. I can see the cream of wheat doing a better job as it is more dense. the oatmeal almost formed the shoulder.

I will be using once fired 06 brass which I will run through a standard 35 whelen die and then try the cream of wheat

How does that sound?

Sounds like a winner! Load up your cases and go for it. Let us know how it turns out. FWIW, you may notice that the shoulder will be slightly rounded right at the outside corner. This will do no harm, and will sharpen right up the first time you use it for a regular load. I form 260AI, 6.5x55AI, 7-08AI and 30 Gibbs using this method. Never lost a case yet. Regards, Eagleye
