Have a Milsurp with a very dark bore and have been trying to clean it up. Overnite soaking in Kroil/shooter's choice etc. just didn't work. Patch after patch is Black.
Tried kroil/J-B route too. Then thought about fire lapping Haven't shot it yet so don't know how it that will work. Any ideas? Its a 1912 Norwegian Krag(bubba'd)and outside looks great, JITC:confused:

You can get it bright again, but by the time you do, the rifling will be round edged crap, and any hope of accuracy will be gone.
Been there, done that, long ago, with an old swede. Ruined it. Kicked my butt ever since.

Jim...I just started using Wipe-Out about a month ago..works great!....Just put some in as per directions, let it sit over nite then patch it out...It may take 1/2 doz. try's but it just might do the job....
Won't smooth the barrel though...To smooth it up the best you can take a used bore brush wrap it with fine steel wool and goop on some JB bore paste....Use a rod guide also...just run your rod thru then thread on your brush with the steel wool and JB bore paste...that way you keep your rod guide clean (er)......:)

Just lap it normally with a bronze brush and cloth wrapped around it. Use the appropriate grit lapping compound and giver. I did it to a 338 that had a really rough bore (machine marks) and it saved it from being a throw away.

It was a last resort thing though...

What Grit lapping compound did you use? And why a bronze brush as opposed to a jag wrapped with a patch?

John said it... good advice...

"You can get it bright again, but by the time you do, the rifling will be round edged crap, and any hope of accuracy will be gone."

What ever accuracy you have now... will be less if you lap it...

You can not restore the damage already done... steel is missing, polishing and removing more steel is detrimental.

thats good advice. if the rifle still has some value as a shooter leave it alone. The fix being contemplated can only degrade accuracy.

Thanks guys--- I'm going to quit My arms are getting tired!! I'll just shoot it as is and see what its like. I had a 98 with a badly coroded bore once that still did 1.5" groups. I'll try this one as well. Lets close this up for now. Thats it for now. Thanks again,JITC
