Can somebody point me to a Who's-who of gun please?

I got a good feel for pistols, but otherwise I am lost.

I am interested in decent reliable semi-automatic firearms, and i am just starting out, need to acquire some guns but price is an issue. I like the black "tactical" style stuff. No interest in wood grain/camo etc. no $$$ for bling finishes as of yet.

Shotguns:
whats a good starter semi-auto, and what causes some to be restricted vs non-res when it seems that most can have barrels matched to the requirement.
also why are some semi-auto shotguns prohibited? ie: SPAS-12?
I assume 3" shell shotguns pack more punch than 2 3/4?
may also consider pump action.

.22:
would like a cheap plinking gun, semi auto. probably rifle. again, who's who?
Is stuff like Kel-tec PLR-22 available here?

General:
-What kind of "cool" stuff is available: ie: I know some more popular guns like H&k MP5 are prohibited
What about new barrel materials and such. Stainless barrels? Low maintenance but carry a price?

thanks in advance!

#1- Put on your flame suit...you're going to need it.
#2 - You seem to already have a pretty good handle on what's out there. You can visit any of our fine sponsors listed at the top of the page and see what's out there and available.

Do the PAL course before you do anything. Read every firearm book in your public library too.
"...why are some semi-auto shotguns restricted?..." Usually because they're scary looking like a SPAS-12. Otherwise, the barrel length and OAL rules apply to shotguns just like any other semi-auto centre fire.
"...3" shell shotguns pack more punch than..." Yep. More felt recoil and pellets too.
Look into a Remington 11-87.
"...Kel-tec..." Low end stuff. If you want a .22 with tons of aftermarket bits and pieces, buy a Ruger 10/22. For just fun shooting buy a Savage Model 64.

Hit the library. Hordes of firearm related books in most of 'em. And buy a copy of Hatcher's Notebook. Your local gun shop or Amazon.

No good reason

Typically yes

may also consider pump action.

Ruger 10/22 is the way to go, at least IMO

AR15's are available, they're restricted, thats all I can think of right now

Yes, they're not zero maintenance though

thanks in advance!
