I plan on taking a Canada goose this thanksgiving and am going to be relatively close to some houses/cottages but will be shooting out over a lake.
I have been searching to no avail to find the laws concernning the minimum distance I am aloud.
I'm sure there has to be one but can not find any.
I am in 53A in Ontario.

remember most "minimum" distance laws are only if you don't have permission from the building owners
go ask if they mind you hunting/shooting if you are within the distance and if they say you can you are good to go

In Ontario, provincial law is 100 yards from a dwelling and you do not require permission to do so from the property owner. You only require permission to hunt on his/her property. You may have to check your municipality for other restrictions.

I have been looking on the MNR websites, the Environment Canada website and the RCMP website..........nada, distances from roads/right of ways, vehicular restrictions, disability provisions....blah bla bla. But nothing about building proximities.. It should be easier than this to access these kinds of things!

I will have permission from the land owner but the neighbor on either side may complain. Just want to cover my ass. The houses are all on long narrow lots with the houses on one end and the lake front on the other......about 100yds separate the two ends.

So is that it? 4 replies all with different answers, no links nothing? Just guess? I would have thought there would be more opinions on the topic. Guess the CGN crowd is more interested in bear defense threads than useful topics.

I can't find anything about distances from dwellings...Where I duck hunt (in trenton, ON) my blind is about 100m from a cottage/house. My town doesn't have any firearms discharge bylaws, so we are pretty fortunate around here.

If there are any restrictions for you, they will be at the municipal level. Contact the city hall for the town you plan to hunt and find out if there are any hunting/shooting bylaws.

Good luck!!

It is a great thing isn't it!

it should be an easy call

LOL Famous last words when it comes to geese! Think very hard about how to close the range to the required 20-30 yards (yeah yeah you can kill em at 40 but closer is much better). You likely will only get one chance so make absolute sure you got cover all the way and don't shoot unless your well within range. If you get a chance at them on the dock take the furthest one while they are landborne so you get an extra mili second at the closest ones before they rocket up to 30 mph. If you can kill them from cover all the better you might get a poke at them as they circle. reload with as little movement as possible and keep your head down. If St Hubert shines on you there will be good cover on the up wind side of the birds. You might even wait for that wind. I apologise for the skeptical unsolicited advice but I have disapointed myself a 100 times on sure thing geese. Mind you I am the self proclaimed world's worst waterfowler and come by the title honestly. oh yeah and have a canoe real handy for the wounded ones that swim off over the horizon.
Good luck hope you get 3 of them they are a real treat.

Wow, who cares? Just talk to the people that live there if they don't care who the hell else is going to care that you shot a goose 50 ft from a house. No one is going to waste time and get you charged for that.

Just seems stupid to me quit worrying and go hunt!

this is a form and should be treated as such and not legal advice .Should find out the local laws and regs for the area you intend to hunt and not rely on opinions from other provinces ,just sayin

You should contact the township office where the homes are located. We hunt a township that has strict rules on discharging or carrying a firearm on public or other persons property.

I have never seen a minimum distance to discharge a firearm from a dwelling in Ontario for hunting or target shooting. I can say that my gun club you shot from inside a building to targets outside and it is approved by the CFO’s office. Other firing ranges I have seen in Ontario have inside ranges so the bullet never goes outside. So out of my own experience for target shooting you are good to go. If someone can post the regulations for hunting it would be appreciated as I have never been able to find them.

I got my answer for you from a CO who is a personal friend. He told me Ontario Provincial Law states that no person shall discharge a firearm within 100 yards of an occupied dwelling.

Your CO friend is wrong.

There is no such provincial law.

Maybe a municipal bylaw, but nothing provincial.

i looked into this a while back. this is correct. there is no law, for Ontario. PLEASE cite the provincial or municipal section, of the Act,

I did find for NL, but that is it.
