Firebird targets - any luck with airguns?

I went out last week and tried out the "airflash 40" which are marketed as air rifle targets. I shot them with a crosman 1322 and RWS hobby pellets. Chronograph reads 450fps with those. I wasn't able to set off a single target despite a lot of hits.

12 gauge target loads - #7 1/2 shot at 1050fps did the trick every time. Those are 2.4mm in diameter and weigh 1.5 grains, ans even one single pellet was enough. So it seems velocity is the key.

I was hoping this would be a good target for the sub-500 fps crowd, but no luck.

Has anyone here had success setting them off with an airgun? what muzzle velocity was necessary? Maybe using round nose or pointed pellets?

I assume they are designed for sub-12 foot-pound guns (the max you can get in the UK without a license) so maybe they just need a bit more power. Unfortunately I don't own any other airguns so I can't test that out.

let's hear about your experiences!

Never tried the airgun ones, Love the rifle ones though... I was hitting the 40mm ones at 300Y.... somewhat consistently...

I was able to set them off with the oldest and crappiest .177 break barrel springer I've ever seen. (the barrel was even bent!) lol! Once I figured out where to hold, every hit resulted in a flash.

Mine worked just fine with a Crosman M-177. A couple of times they didn't go off with the first hit, but always the second. Be sure to remove the first pellet or it'll come flying at you! One other thing, don't even bother with the other targets for the pellet gun. It won't set them off.

That sure is interesting. I'll have to try again with pointed or round nose pellets. my pistol shoots much faster than a red ryder, I can only assume the steel BBs are more effective at setting the things off. Thanks guys!

Was out with the mod tootall and he was able to get them to go off with his air rifle.

Orange ones, yes. Yellow ones were not as sensitive. This is the revue I wrote for the CT site.

Firebird exploding targets

" These are advertized as Loud Smoke and Flash.
They do make a pleasing cloud of white smoke along with a small shower of sparks, but they are not loud. More of a gentle pop than a blast. Oh well...
Also, they do reliably pop when hit by a .22 Short rimfire, but NOT reliably when hit with a .177 cal air rifle pellet, even at 1100 fps. (Benjamin Discovery)
I tried both the orange (for shotgun) and the yellow (for rifle). The orange took one hit without popping before doing so on the second hit. The yellow had at least two hits before we put a .22 short into it.
Not bad for a laugh, but be aware that it is NOT loud and needs a solid hit. The pop will be drowned out by the gunfire. Of course, the flash and smoke is fine. "
