I've got a rem 700 in a 300 rum a friend was looking at the fired brass and he said the pin mark doesn't look right it has diffrent dent in it.We looked at the bolt face and the hole for the pin looks a lot bigger than the pin and i was wondering is the normal for the 700 his sako is about half the size any info will be helpfull thanks

I don't know why they have done this but Remington has made the hole for the firing pin so large in the newer 700's. It is sure a lot bigger than the one in my 1980's Mountain Rifle. What you are seeing is the metal of the primer cup flowing into gap between the hole and the firing pin from the pressure upon firing. I think quality control has "gone out the window" on the new guns (shotguns and rifles).

Yup, just like mine! It needs to be sleeved! 700's are very common for this I guess? I am told it is more of a cosmetic issue that anything. I still don't like it and will have mine done!

Or you could leave it and don't worry about it. This rifle is 28 years old...Shoots fine...;)

Why Remington are now doing this is a bit of a Mystery. The large firing pin hole used to be the domain of the M70 Winchester for several decades, so to say it is a quality control issue is debatable. I bought a brand new M70 in 1963, and it had the same problem. As has been noted, it is more cosmetic than a real problem. FWIW, My M700 CDL in 270 has the same thing, but it is one of the best shooting 270's I have ever shot. Regards, Eagleye.

I certainly agree there is no point in bushing the firing pin hole. There really is no danger and extraction will not be a problem in a bolt action. In a falling block single shot action with no firing pin retractor it would be a different story!

It is also indicater that the loads are starting to get warm

My pic is of factory ammo...
That was my first thought regarding factory loads. Not being much of a Remington fan lately, nor Ruger, I do question the QC standards on rifles that are approaching, and sometimes surpassing, the 1K mark.
When someone says that this is not an issue, they're right, for now. Pierce some primers and watch the bolt face and firing pin deteriorate.

Bushing the front of the bolt for a smaller pin and changing the profile of the slope of the firing pin is a somewhat common alteration for squeezing the most from the 700, it is done to ensure absolute consistency of firing pin travel on firing. It is done regardless of whether the factory pin causes "cratering" or not, it is another accuracy nut's trick for better results, real or imagined.
