ok I am not a gunsmith, however I know my way around a machine shop. I am going to attempt to make couple of firing pins for a older shotgun, What kind of steel is used for this ,,, and do you draw back after heat treat. maybe just heat treat the end to avoid any warp after quench .. any input would be great thanks

Oil hardening steel is best... heat the tip area red and quench... then polish and draw to a blue... same on the other end if it gets smacked by a hammer...

With broken tips on pump action shotguns I usually drilled a hole and silver soldered a piece of the correct size steel rod into place, then made it the correct length and rounded the tip nicely. This repair is better than making a whole new pin with worrisome heat treating... and being a rod silver soldered in place never breaks again.

The same for doubles and O/U pins...

I made a shotgun firing pin out of OH drill rod, or I should say I mad two...the first one I dropped on the cement floor after heat treating before I got it "drawn down" and it literally shattered into 3 pieces...the second one survived till I could draw the temper down a bit ( wifes kitchen oven for an hour at 400 deg) and 12 years later it's still in regular service.

thanks for the info ..I had a similar accident with two blades for a wood chipper ,made them out of 01 then went to take them over to the bench to draw them back a bit,, dropped on the cement floor broke in five pieces. Sometimes slower is faster regards
