Looking for my first AR and don't want to buy one and then regret it and end up upgrading it a year later.

I'm looking at the Daniel Defense V7. Decent choice?

I know very little about AR's in general but I have heard these are very good.

Yes. High/mid to upper tier AR brand. Quality build. The V7 is exactly how I like my ARs.
The only issue is the DD stock trigger can be quite heavy and gritty. And if bought new, are pricey rifles!
After market triggers are plentiful to easily fix the problem.

Literally can’t go wrong with DD. They are the CC of America. Highly regarded and make barrels for Geissele and HK USA.

Every collection should have at least 1 DD in it in my honest opinion.

Daniel Defence, Colt Canada would be my suggestion for an AR.... but either, unless they are on sale, are overpriced new. You can definitely pick up some nice ones on the EE.

DD's & Colts are nice but I really like the S&W MP 15 Sport II. Shot it at 100, 200, 300yds and was really impressed with the results. The trigger is really nice.

S&w is a good AR. But it’s not in the same leaugue as a DD or a Colt. Now I know that our ARs are range toys and we don’t use them on a life or death situation, but if you’re looking to buy a good AR that you won’t feel the need to upgrade, then I’d stay away from s&w.

I’m not trying to knock it. As I said they are good guns and I’ve shot quite a few of them. But they can’t compare to any DD or Colt that I’ve shot.

Got the V7 Pro myself and it is worth every penny. Trigger is awesome, DD's are very good.
Was blown away by the accuracy too. Nice toy.

Definitely Daniel Defense make top notch stuff IF you’re ok with dropping that kind of coin.
I have a heavily upgraded Ruger AR-556 and could argue it’s also an excellent choice right out the box for under $1000

What is the difference between the standard V7, and the V7 Pro?

Longer barrel, bcm gunfighter handle, and geissele trigger iirc.

And to the ruger ar556 guy... sorry it's not in the same league. I'm happy for you that you like it... but it aint no dd.

Correct but major $$$. They only thing I might upgrade on my S&W would be the hand guards but then again I'm not going "full semi auto". Guy at the club I shoot at has a DD. He let me play with it. Nice rifle. Doesn't shoot any different than my S&W. If you don't want to add key mod hand guards, flashlights, extra sights, remote car starter, a portable coffee machine, etc :) then the S&W is an option.
If I had the extra coin I would get myself a Colt LE6920.

The difference comes in the quality of materials and crafsmanship. Not to mention proper barrel contour and midlength gas system to name the big differences.
