I've put off buying an AR long enough, so I'm looking for some options/advice on my first purchase. I can spend up to 2k and would prefer a complete rifle to start. No real experience with the platform, but I am an avid shooter with a fair bit of experience. This will most likely just be a fun gun, no competitions or anything like that. Fire away!
P.S what about the Troy Northern Guard

Thanks for the suggestions, are there specific models in these brands I should look for? Also, I noticed the Colt MRR has a msrp of a few hundred dollars over what I was gonna spend, but if it's a better rifle I could probably scrape up the $, plus it's Canadian. Any comments on the MRR?
 
I have a CC iur rifle, extremely happy with it. Only malfunctions I had was due to norc surplus. And it wasn't a malfunction just had smoke coming out of the mag, so I stopped shooting to check things out.

The Colt Canada/Diemaco rifle are top notch. So are the Colt USA/LMT and BCM rifles. Models? you could go blind searching for models....get a basic rifle and accessorize as needed. A red dot optic or iron sights or even both are good ideas, so is a sling and a bunch of mags. Then spend more money on ammo and get some training to learn how to shoot it effectively.

Also, dont be afraid to buy used, provided it hasn't been bubba'ed unless its by someone who knows what they are doing. Don't worry about a rifle that has 1500-2500 rds through it either.

I recently went through the same "first AR" process. I bought a Norinco CQA for $700. It's everything I wanted - an inexpensive but good quality AR that I can have fun with at the range. It has given me a real appreciation for the design of this iconic gun without breaking the bank. Quite honestly I don't know why you'd want to spend any more unless you were a) really concerned with accuracy (except it's more accurate than I am); b) concerned that it might jam in a firefight (except I don't get into them plus it hasn't malfunctioned yet). Btw, it's got a 10.5" barrel which I really like because it's really light, compact and balanced.

depends on what your plans are for it. If you want to just got to the club and plink at targets set at 200 yds and in, no issues at all. if weight is an issue, then go with the lighter barrel (in this case, shorter is usually lighter). if you want to shoot at longer distances, then a longer barrel will help more. the trade off is it will be slightly heavier. Cranberry was correct in this. This is where I will part ways in his recommendation, you will be buying a significantly better rifle going with the Colt, LMT, Diemaco/CC, BCM. I personally would not buy an Norinco AR. YMMV
