Well today was the vancouver island Region 1 mule and balck bear season opener. A buddy of mine and I left victoria at 5am and traveled from there to sooke, to port renfrew to lake cowichan and then to scutz falls... Did alot of hiking in the bush and didnt see any deer tracks or signs of them at all... Granted it was about 25 degrees outside so we spent the late morning to late afternoon plinking with the .22 at verious locations through out the day as well as testing out my new hand loads for my .303 while waiting for it to cool down.

Well, we were just heading back down one of the deactivated logging roads when we saw a bear on our right side just off the road. I got out and loaded up the enfield but however he had buggered off out of site.... we were just about to take off after him and track when I turned around and noticed another bear about 30 yards away on the opposite side... He was standing on his hind legs facing and looking at us inquisitively. I put the crosshairs on the middle of his chest, tried to calm my nerves, took a deep breath, exhaled and squeezed the trigger. "BANG" "flop" "little twitches".... dead before he hit the moss... dropped him like an anchor right where he stood... we approached with caution after about 3 min and had the 12g with slugs at the ready. They were not needed as we could see he wasnt breathing and so I put another 174grain Hornedy interlock into the right side of the head just to be sure.

Took us 30 min to drag the intact carcass out to the road... Autopsy reviled the first round went though the neck and spinal cord.

Not only is this my first bear, but also my first big game kill.
