After working up an extremely accurate 223 Rem 40gr V-Max load @ 3380 average velocity I headed out to Alberta for a month with my wife and son.

This is the result of my first try calling while there and first attempt with this little rifle...

Good job! Tell us more about the experience, how/when did you call, what kind of response did you get? (Did the 'yote sneak in or come running?)

how was the accuracy at 3700-3800?

I don't know how to get a 40gr V-Max out of a 21" barreled 223 Rem barrel to go any faster if I use a slower burning powder like Varget the velocity is even slower.

We just chrono'ed a few 37.5gr 40gr V-Max loads today from my old 26" barreled 22-250 they did 3800fps + but my son was shooting so I can't really comment on accuracy somewhere around 1" @ 100 yards.

I'll load up some more 40gr V-Max in my 22-250 for my next range trip and let you know what kind of accuracy I get.

I used a Primus Ki-Yi call after walking about 500 yards into the fields across from my in-laws place and just after we set up I spotted this coyote @ about 500 yards.

I gave a 4 -5 second long injured rabbit calls and it came in at a full run and stopped at 40 yards.

I decided that was close enough to shoot it was a classic bang/flop...

Took maybe 30 - 40 seconds from making the first call to when I shot.

It was one of the -30 plus wind chill mornings in early Jan it was so cold that the moisture in the air was forming into little crystals.

Nothing like cold temps to make a coyote respond to the "dinner bell":D

21" barrel definitely wont be as fast as a longer tube, but I could get 3700 fps with a 40 gr Nosler BT behind 28 grains Ramshot X-Terminator in a 22" 1:12 twist Rem 700 I had.

My 22-250 is a dog for speed, factory 40 Vmax do 3850, handloads with 36 grs Benchmark do 3920. Not as accurate as the 52-60 gr loads too so I will keep the 40 grainers for my 221

If you'd like a bit more speed.. would reccomend H335 and Reloder 7 for your T/C

In my 21 " T/C

Manual max of 28.0 grains H335 45 grain Hornady "hornet"...3510..3531..3522 fps
Rifles max...24.0 grains Reloder 7...40 gr.Nosler BTip....3498..3505..3528 fps

Both loads shoot well under an inch on days with no wind....

WOW definately want to push the velocities a bit and have been looking at the RL 7 I would also use it in my T/C 375 Win barrel.

TB
your getting those velocities from a 223 I'll have to look around for some Ramshot X-Terminator powder would be a bit cheaper than rechambering to a 222 Mag AI that I have been looking at doing.
