Guys,

I want to build my first custom rifle and I decided with a 10/22.

What I want:

A blaster stock prehaps... bull barrel definitely. I'm looking to build a nice accurate rifle.

What do you guys recommend that I absolutely do? Do I need any special tools to acomplish this or will standard tools suffice?

if I bought a stock 10/22 with a bull barrel, would that be accurate enough? I'd modify the trigger some, but I've never shot Ruger's stock 10/22 bull barrels before.

10\22 Build

Internally, a VQ match extractor and hammer will give positive extraction and a 2.5-3 pound trigger pull. I consider these "must haves" and both are available on Rimfiresports.com. Prices are right and they ship to Canada.
They also have lots of other goodies for the 10\22.

Good Shooting

If you are looking for an accurate semi.

Remmy m597 available w/or wo bull barrel, or a VC barrel $$, Jard trigger, VC extractor (if needed), and a nice target stock.

Why do you want a Bull barrel? I'd opt for the standard, find out if it shoots, if it does leave it alone, if it doesn't get a VC barrel.

Just a heads up....I bought a bad VC trigger and mag release, both are literally useless

Their quality has slipped too far,go with another maker of 10/22 parts

That's interesting to hear. So far these are all just ideas. I love the blaster stocks... and I like bull barrels. I would like stainless, so prehaps I should just buy the 10/22 stainless with bull and drop it in the blaster stock and get some trigger/extractor work done on it and it should be fine eh?

It continues to

amaze me how many people feel the VQ trigger is GREAT.:confused: I just have the hammer and have done my own trigger work. It feels by far better than any VQ trigger group I have tried. ;) In my opinion it is not worth the money paid for.

Hi Fry

Great decision on going with the 10/22. No other (rimfire) out there offers more in terms of parts available and customizing options. The boydes blaser stock is a great choice - and is also what I decided on for my 10/22. I got the revival industries yukon stock though - same stock sold with a different company. I wasn't aware of any places in Canada to get the boydes stock but knew I could get the Revival indsutries stock at bits of pieces.

Another good idea to go with the bull barrel. THey offer superior accuracy because of barrel harmonics (this of course does not just apply for the 10/22 but with just about every other gun out there assuming everything is kept the same excpet the barrel). The only slight disadvantage that I can see with the heavy barrel on the 10/22 is that they are a little heavy for the reciever if you free float them. If you do free float (which will likely offer better accuracy and will also prevent the gun from changing POI too much from changes in humidity), make sure you also glass bed the gun or at the very least put some type of preassure pad in the front of the barrel channel to support the barrel up a bit more - therefore supporting the reciever.

The 10/22T barrels are fairly good from the factory - maybe not quite as good as the GM bull barrels but definatley a lot better than the 10/22 standard stock sporter barrels. I have seen one guy customize his 10/22T with the factory barrel to shoot very good by glass bedding and pilar bedding it.

As far as tools all you need is some allen keys (I think) and a screwdrive, etc. Another plus of the 10/22 - don't have to be a gunsmith or anything close to work on them and if you ever mess up just post your problems on here and someone will be able to help you out preaty soon.

For accessories I would get a bolt buffer, extended magazine release and mabe be a hammer. A hex screw is also a great investment. BCboy on here sells bolt buffers and hex screws at good prices - and your other accessories you should be able to find at rimfire sports or hawktech sports - both located in the US but offer free shipping to Canada on most products.

Hope this helps ;)

I'm swimming against the flow I know, But don't discount the 597... it can be had for cheap and there is some aftermarket for it...

Not my pics here, borrowed from RFC...
