So I will be getting my PAL very shortly here, site says that my application was processed and my license was in the mail, and I was going to go buy my first rifle as soon as I got it. Now my question is what do I ask for and what should I be looking out for when all I want is a single shot .22 with a clip.. so what's the right term(s) that I need to use so that the guy doesn't look at me like I'm mentally challenged.. hehe

Thanks in advanced for your replies :)

You want a bolt action magazine fed repeater. I love my Marlin 22. I can shoot empty shotgun shells at 25 yards. I use it to shoot partridge, and I only shoot them in the head. For the price go with a Marlin.

The Remington 597 and Ruger 10/22 are very popular semi-auto .22lr rifles as well. The Remington is cheaper and I hear it shoots better out of the box, but the 10/22 has way more aftermarket parts.

If you want a semi auto I'd go with either the Ruger 10-22 or the Remington 597. If you think you're going to want lots of tactical aftermarket goodies go with the Ruger. For a bolt action I like the Savage Mark II's but every gun store has lots of great used .22 bolt actions that can be had for around a $100.00. Look at several, pick the one you like and don't let others tell you that you need to spend a fortune.

To check the status of your application, go to the CFC website at:http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp, then look under online services on the sidebar for "check the status of your application". Finally, click "proceed to secure site to check the status of your application", choose new applicant, and enter your info. If you just sent it in, it could take a week or two to for your application show up on the site ( it took about 2 weeks for mine to show on the site).

Which is better: center fire or rim fire?

Depends on what you are planning on using it for.

Personally I would recommend a .22lr for a first rifle. Learn to shoot well first. A 22 has no real recoil and is cheap to shoot ($20 and up for 500 rounds).

Once you get 'hooked' on the shooting sports you will more than likely end up with a couple of rifles / shotguns / handguns. I still shoot my rimfire more than my centerfire stuff so starting with a 22 will not go wasted.

The first gun I bought was my Savage Mark II. Sweet little .22LR, shoots good, cleans easy and for someone who's not used to firearms it's a great place to start from.

And whenever I go to the range with my one (soon to be more) centerfire, the first thing I do is "warm up" with 50 or 100 rounds of .22. Then I switch to something meaner.

And it's also a great gun to introduce people to shooting with. It's amazingly easy to use, it barely recoils and the noise isn't as intimidating as, say, a .300 Winchester Magnum, which is always good for people who are willing to try shooting but aren't 100% convinced it's a good idea. And once you see that they enjoy the .22, you can give them a fix of something meaner and watch them beg for more :D

I've gone shooting before, and I'm definitely hooked :D Phoned up in saskatoon and found a black on stainless ruger 10-22 for 300$, defnitely going to pick that up this weekend. Got my PAL monday too :D

there aren't many (or perhaps any now) large mags for marlins, sadly. You should be able to get normal sized mags for them though. If youre around saskatoon, i do believe that saskatoon gun works has afew of them. I think they were on one of the racks.
