First flintlock kit

Haven't looked into the price of flints lately, but this thread has made me a little curious. Rustywood is asking $7.00 per flint and I didn't see any quantity discount. I don't consider those offered by the bucket full worth mentioning.
What follows might be considered a moot point because flints are currently out of stock at Stonewall Creek, but they have been temporarioy out of stock before.
Stonewall Creek Outfitters are asking $4.00US per flint with the choice of either black English or French amber. HOWEVER, they also offer bags of 50 for $115.00US. That works out to $2.30US per flint or, at the current exchange rate, $3.22 Cdn. Their shipping is very reasonable. In addition, they ship as an individual, rather than a business so , in my experience, the order is more likely to arrive HST free. Let's say the shipping cost is $25.00US and HST is charged. $140.00US converts to.$195.80Cdn and 15%HST would bring the total to $225.17 landed at the door. That works out to $4.50C per flint. If we apply 15% HST to Rustywood's flints, the price is $8.05 and we still have the shipping to consider. When we purchase flints from Stonewall Creek, we generally do a group buy to reduce the individual shipping cost. The quality has never been a disappointment.

I phoned them up and confirmed they’re out of stock, I’m going to order some when they come in. I may also order from heritage products. They both have the 1” in stock, I was thinking I could trim 1/8” off and use them but I probably should just wait and order the right ones. No way I’m paying $7 per flint, probably $9 after tax and shipping.

Thanks for mentioning Heritage products. They were not on my radar. Assume you are referencing the use of 7/8" x 1" as a temporary replacement for 3/4" x 7/8". The excess width should not be a significant problem but, as you mentioned, the back will need to be notched to clear the jaw screw so the flint can set further back. Notch your leather so the flint can set hard back against the jaw screw. The French ambers tend to be thinner than, but not inferior to, the black English. They would likely be easier to notch or knap to a shorter length. Plenty of videos on flint knapping.

I’ve had and still own several Indian made Bess’s…all excellent shooters although admittedly a little crude in areas. I’ve also owned two of the much vaunted and expensive Pedersoli’s as well. One was ok at best and the other terrible…get a coin and flip it nowadays when it comes to quality.
I bought an Indian made NW Trade Gun from Things Military. The front 1/4 of the barrel literally had a couple degree bend in it! " a little crude " is being generous for most examples. Mine looked like it was made by some runny nose kid wearing flip flops in Kyber Pass who also rebuilds car batterys on the side. Every square inch of that gun was a meme lol. Didnt trust my eyesight to the workmanship I was seeing so I cut it apart and turned it into a pretty awesome and highly unique airsoft gun.

After chopping and milling the barrel and other components for that project, i have to admit the replica at its core did seem durably constructed. If I initially had the faith, it couldve been worked into a very solid feeling and firing Trade gun for half the cost of its competition.

My understanding is I’m supposed to use a 7/8x1” flint in my colonial. I was going to wait for them to be in stock, but I may have accidentally put in an order for some 1”x 1 1/8” while trying to price check the total with shipping for 4 dozen. Most likely will end up talking to them tomorrow.

How much do kibler kits usually cost after tariffs/duties? Plus is there any issue with customs? Really want to buy one as my first flintlock but im not really knowledgeable on importing firearms from the US.

Depends on the kit and options. An SMR without upgrades would likely run you about $2,100 to $2,200 CDN landed at your door. I don't believed they are now a tariffed item but, if so, that would boost the cost. Perhaps others who have recently purchased could comment on tariffs. No problem importing them and you cannot beat a Kibler kit for quality and ease of assembly. Watch the Kibler videos.

Assuming no tariffs, there is the cost of the kit; shipping; currency conversion; taxes; tax collection fee.
Not inexpensive, but the Kibler kits are about as high quality as you can get.
Spend some time on the Kibler website, and go to the americanlongrifles.org forum where Jim is a regular and active member.

The best person to ask that would be Jim himself! They would know if there are any issues or tariffs sending to Canada. As far as cost goes you need to do a bit of math on the exchange, sometimes I get hit with duty on items, but its pretty random.

The flintlock kits you can import easily no problems. The hawken kit though is a different story as it is percussion and you have to follow the same rules as importing a centerfire rifle.Kind of stupid but then again so is our government. They are keeping us safe from mass shootings and robberies from people running around with those dangerous single shot muzzleloaders
