First generation Remington 700 titanium in 30-06

Hi all,

I'm considering the purchase of a Rem 700ti in 30-06 --- this is a first generation rifle with 22" barrel and ADL (blind mag) configuration.

First off, has anyone handled and fired one of these light rifles in 30-06 and what did you think of the experience re: recoil? I imagine with the heavier weight bullets it's got to be stout. It seems counter-intuitive to me to buy a mountain rifle with a long action, but I'm a big fan of the 30-06 and I figure I can reload some reduced loads for target shooting.

Second, I understand that the second gen Ti Alaskan were a bit of a FUBAR by Remington both in terms of configuration and price. Aside from the barrel and bottom metal, is there any actual difference in the receivers between the first gen and second gen Ti's?

And lastly, since the first generation T's have been discontinued for a while, I haven't seen any come up for sale recently, so what would be the typical going rate for an unmodified first gen 700ti in low-use/good condition?

Titaniums

The only big problem with the factory Titaniums is the barrels. They sometimes can be very problematic to get to shoot well. With an aftermarket barrel that becomes a non issue. If you plan on keeping it stock, just be aware it may not shoot to your liking. I have owned three of them, still own 2 with aftermarket barrels, sold the one with the factory barrel in .260.
 
Are the barrel issues you mention related to the light contour or were there other manufacturing issues contributing to the problems (e.g., poor chambers, rifling, threading)?

I'll keep that in mind as I work up some loads and hopefully things will be fine. I actually wouldn't mind having a reason to rebarrel to a slightly heavier contour in 280 :)

Well, the Sako does set a pretty high standard... I'm ashamed to say that it still sits unfired in my gun room as I've been a bit bity with other things and haven't had time to source rings.

Thanks for the price info... it's been a while since I saw one on the EE and at the time I wasn't keeping track of the prices.

I would say the light contour. These barrels heat up very quickly!! They can shoot well with the right bullet. I have just found them a lot fussier to load for than any other 700 I have owned. If you rebarrel with a aftermarket quality barrel it would be much better. My Pac-nor shoots 3/4" groups with 140 TTSX bullets and it's their featherweight contour.
 
I found a 30-06 Titanium that was new in the box. I was excited, but it turned out to be a big piece of crap. 8" groupings at 100m. Tried many different loads, varying tip pressure and free floating. The best I could do was dial it in with single shots. First shot from a cold barrel would go exactly where I wanted it, but any follow up shots were unbelieveably wild. It became a donor action.

Picked up a 260 Titanium last year and it is a great shooter. Shelf loads are giving me an average of 1.5" groups. The accuracy does not compete with my primary rifles, but for a rifle, scope, mounts, sling, and 4 rounds that combine less than 6lbs, 1.5MOA is OK.
