I'm looking to get my first guns, looking for some peoples inputs

I'm thinking of getting a 12 gauge and a rim fire 22 to start, cheap on ammo and i can learn how to shoot straight with the 22... talked to someone and they said i should just get a bigger caliber rifle right away.

so what were your first guns you got? any brands/calibers to stay away from?

Also any starter restricted handgun that doesn't cost an arm and a leg suggestion would be great.

Thanks!

Any .22 and as much ammo as you can carry/afford.
22 bolt guns are alot of fun as well. 22 pistols are great to have, rookie friendly, cheap to feed.

So, get whatever 22 you can get your hands on, and get started.
Don't forget the paperwork and club memberships of course.

I would say a 12 guage and .22 are a very good start. You can use the 12 guage until you decide on the hunting you want to do and what larger caliber you want for specific big game. The 22 is fun, cheap, and helps develop shooting skills. I first got a shotgun for duck and deer and then a 30-06 for deer and eventually moose then a rimfire for plinking. I live in the city and had nowhere to plink so I jumped right into the 30-06 for deer hunting because there was no use for a rimfire at the time. After that point calibers, types of actions and guns start to fit into specific niches bassed on your preferences. Or just because it's fun or you have an addiction. :D I have 2x 12 ga, 2x .22 rimfires, 1x.223 rem, and 1x 30-06. Each has a purpose, practical, fun or other.....

just my 2 cents.

Savage or Marlin bolt action 22
Remington or Mossberg pump action shotgun
Ruger 22 pistol
Savage or Stevens bolt action centrefire rifle

These would be excellent firearms to start out with while you learn and develop your preferences

I've got to tell you the truth. One of my favorite guns to shoot and would be a great starter gun is a henry lever action .22. At one time I believe Frontier arms had them for under 250.

A 12g and .22lr rifle is definitely a good way to start out. Both are cheap to shoot and you can develop good habits with the .22 before moving on to centerfire rifles without spending a ton of money on ammo. My first 2 guns were a Remington 597 (.22lr) and 12g 870 express.

Everybody I talked to about .22's recommended the Ruger 10/22 so thats what I ended up getting. Its a stainless/synthetic combo and I havent had any problems with it at all, highly recommended! I also picked up a 12 gauge around the same time and went with the Mossberg 500 cruiser. It's not very practical for hunting but its just plain fun to shoot.

All are great suggestions. Ruger 10- 22 is a great rifle, and will last.
870 Rem in 12 ga is also a warrior in the field.

Not into handguns but if I were, I'd get a revolver with the interchangeable cylinders for 22lr\22 mag.

The only thing I wouldn't suggest is a tube-feed 22 - probably can't buy these new anymore anyways?? My dad has an old Cooey and although it's plenty accurate and reliable it seems to take forever to load it. You're loading for as long as it takes to shoot it. Ruger 10/22 is a great choice.

My first gun was a .22 russian army surplus training rifle from Marstar. They don't have that one anymore, but have a bunch of Norincos for around $150-$200, if budget is a problem. I probably put 2000 rounds (~$70 :) ) through it before buying a centerfire...
