Not wanting to bring up the old thread again (since I haven't been on for a while) I am still looking around at what options I have for my first handgun, for target and IPSC (so semi and 9mm or over) and in my price range ($800 or less) and I noticed a couple that interested me, one was the CZ-75 champion (although I do not need a 'competition' gun as my first, I'm pretty sure the muzzle break would be nice to have) and I aslo like the looks of it, and the other was the Magnum Research Baby Eagle in 9mm. Can anyone tell me about these? I have heard really good things about the CZ's but would still like to keep my options open, and I do not think I want a glock because I do not like the looks and would prefer metal over plastic. I really like the look of Sigs, but I believe they are way out of my price range:D I am taking my restricted right away and then will want to take the Black Badge, but I need my own gun for that so I will be in the market for a handgun soon..... Again, like I mentioned before, I will go to Wolverine to take a look around as well.

BTW, I am open to different calibers as well, but I need 9mm or larger caliber for IPSC, but it seems like 9mm is the way to go.....(BTW I want a caliber that is readily available)

I tried a friend's Glock and Walter P99, same issue, I prefer metal-frame pistols too. Like how they handle recoil better.

CZ is a very solid choice.. and you can go with a regular 75B or 85 (ambidexterous safety). I got mine "previously loved / used" from Gunnar at ARMCO (banner at the top of this webpage) for under $500 after taxes and shipping and two mags.

That price range allows you some room for Hogue grips, different sights, and LOTS OF PRACTISE AMMO!

I would second the CZ75 or 85. I love my previously enjoyed CZ85 and it has never failed. The only thing I would like is to find an adjustable rear site for it and someone that could install it.
 
Go with the CZ it allows for Cocked and Locked carry or DA carry wheres as the Baby Eagle is DA carry only.
 
refurbished sig p226 or p220? Very good quality guns and good looks also. A good quality plastic gun like the H&K usp would be a good choice also.

IMHO, 1-the walther P99 has one of the worst triggers ever...sorry for those who like them :eek: :D

2- CZ guns are a very good value, solid, reliable and cheap, but are not good looking guns. Again, this is just my opinion and tastes vary...
 
I was looking at a SIG 229 and I really like the look of SIGs, they are more expensive but maybe it would be a better aidea to wait and save up? Also, when I took the restricted course, when handling the different handguns I noticed that the grips felt small for my hands and weren't comfortable, but the 1911 grip was a little longer and felt better, so I guess I would be looking for a longer grip? Also, I like the look and styling of revolvers but I guess it would probably be a better idea to go with an autoloader for IPSC? :?

Well now you know what to do. You get a 1911 semiauto (or 2), a nice revolver (or 2), and then you go and start trying (and buying) the different guns you dont have. By then you'll probably be broke like many of us because we can't stop wanting more and different guns.
 
As a guy who shot revolvers for a long time, I'm sure I already hate myself for saying this - get a 1911. It's where you'll end up anyway, so save yourself some time. Armco's Norincos look like a great place to start. Cheap enough for a first gun, and will leave you money so you can buy a ton of ammo, or reloading gear - you'll need both.
