I am looking for opinions on a good choice for a first time handgun owner. I'm debating between a Ruger P512MKIII and a Taurus 94. Any thoughts on semi-auto vs revolver?

Between those two, definately the Ruger (Taurus has customer service problems and Ruger quality is superb with excellent customer service just in case).

22LR is a good cheap starting calibre.

Revolver vs semi auto..... there are guys that have shot their whole life that can't decide so they just have a few of each :D A 357mag revolver lets you shoot cheap 38 special as well so it is like two guns in one but some guys just love the look, feel, and shootability of a semi auto (myself included).

Hard to recommend a gun without knowing your budget, intended use, and personal characteristics though. Your hands will play a huge role in determining what guns suit you best. If possible, head to TSE in Calgary and try as many guns as you can at their range. Else, head to your local range and I am sure a few guys would be more than happy to give their opinion (and maybe let you shoot some rounds).

I've got a Ruger 22/45 with 4.5" slab barrel and love it. I went the semi-auto route and was fine with it. Then again, I like to shoot rapid fire once in a while and just prefer semi's all around. Rugers are also known to be reliable as heck and I doubt you could find a post here that said 'my ruger is broken'.
