I am looking to buy my first handgun and I'm not too sure what to get. Obviously i would love a glock but it is a little too pricey for me at this time. I'm thinking 9mm to start off with. Any suggestions?

Well, if you want cheap, you might pick up a tokarev...my buddy just got one new for $250 and he loves it...can't remember the caliber, but I believe it's similar (recoil wise) to 9mm. Surplus ammo is about $10 for 40 rounds...cheaper than 9mm. Most people would suggest you start with a 22lr pistol for good reason...cheap ammo, no recoil to teach you bad habits. You would also be wise to visit gun shops and actually handle the guns to find one that feels right in your hand. Or if you are like me you will ignore all logical advice and get a steyr m40a1 as your first gun....why? Because it's pretty...
Happy shopping

just picked up a tok polish and so did all the friends .249 bucks gun is brand new the ammo is cheep great way to start or you could go out and by a sig 226 x 5 .
just stick with the tok

between Norinco and Tokarev I'll lean toward tokarev.
$500 can get you a gun and 2000 rounds
Sounds like a lot of fun at the range. a lot of learning experience too

Seriously? If the cost of the gun is bothering you then the cost of the ammo to feed it should be carefully considered as well. If you shoot once a week even just for plinking then you're likely looking at 100 rounds a week. At around $15/50 you will shoot $1560 worth of ammo a year more or less.

Starts to make the cost of the gun seem less of an issue?

If these numbers are scaring your wallet then it may be that you would be better off with a .22 rimfire handgun for now. You can shoot that same 100 rounds a week for a total annual cost of around $240 based on buying a case of 5000 rounds at the beginning of the year.

At my local store : 2500 rounds for $360, 7.62x25
Polish Tokarev : $226 (the gun - 1 Mag - clearing rod - soft case)

Good advice. Norinco M-93 is a good starter, for under 2 bills, shipped.
Norinco 1911's are also very good, in either 9mm or 45ACP(for later).

I'd also suggest the NOS Polish Tokarov & lots of surplus ammo!

Second to that would be the Norinco 1911, heck of a deal with Canada Ammo for a pistol & 1000 rounds of 45... Problem is, after those 1000 rounds run out, the 45 ammo is pricey...

Third, if you don't care that it's a 22LR, the M93 clone of the Woodsman is a great gun & ammo would be cheap!

Fourth, have a look at some of the Glock deals, for a little more, you would be stepping into a great gun...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. I have a Tok, Norinco 1911 (on the way) and a Glock, along with the Advantage Arms conversion kit for the Glock. Lots of options for some fun!

I know this first handgun question has been answered many times. I'd recommend a 22 pistol as a starting point because they are easier for a new shooter to shoot well because no recoil and ammo is cheap and plentiful. I've had a Tok TT-33 for a number of years and like shooting it but would consider it more of a learning curve for a new shooter due to recoil and how loud the round is. Also cheap surplus 7.62 X 25 ammo is available now but tends to dry up and was last manufactured years ago in the Soviet bloc.

Not to bash a brand but I'd consider a glock an entry level hand gun. My opinion is save up and buy something that's a higher quality and buy what feels best in your hand. But that's my opinion. I found glocks don't fit me too well and feel kinda cheap. I'd prefer a m&p .22 to start rather than a glock. Go and feel what you like best. Maybe the glock will suit you best? Good luck
