I managed to get out for a quick walk in the fields just before supper today and tagged my first groundhog of the year. I don't normally hunt hogs a lot this early in the season but the itch was there.
I spotted the hog a long way off so I got closer to even the odds a bit and to help deal with a fairly strong crosswind today. I laid prone and held high and into the wind. When I fired I lost sight of the hog so I walked up to the hole to check. As I was walking I paced it of at 270 steps. There was a splash of blood in on the ground and dead hog in the hole. Turns out I hit it right at the bottom of the sternum.
The really fun part was that I left my .22-250 at home. I knocked this one off with a Remington 700 .35 Whelen with a 1.5-5x20 Leupold.
