First off...thanks to my bud Dennis for letting me join him..

Yup thats right.....first time deer hunting since I left Ontario in the spring of `92.
Opening day today in the WMU 232...and I had a FREAKIN blast. Saw all kinds of Mulies but I only have a Whitetail tag. Nailed a coyote though out about 250 yrds so that made me happy.
Saw a couple of whitetails later in the afternoon, but none were shots I'd be comfortable taking.
So its whitetail 1... me 0
Still got 49 more hunting days :D

That was my first hunt in the last 8 years or so. It was fun but the friggen wind was just stupid out there. Oh well next saturday will be a different story....:D

Good on ya for getting back in the field. I hunted deer yesterday for the first time in 2 seasons myself.

I was playing guide to a brand new (3rd or 4th trip out) hunter, and had an excellent day even though we didn't see any deer. On the plus side, I came across a spot I've hunted birds at previously, and there was some deer sign there, so back I'll go!

Lol...and them smart ass coyotes better keep an eye open for us now eh?

Yeah....sadly the early forcast calls for warm temps on saturday and sunday +6 and 7 with 15 kph winds.
But a die hard never gives in.

Ok, now its the following Saturday since the Nov 1 opening day...
Right off the bat from the stroke of the minute hand on the watch saying "ok, you can shoot now", we spotted 3 whitetail does in a field about 250 yrds out. But, very close to a house whose owner whould have given us grief so we passed on it. The next time we spotted ANY deer was about 5 hrs later, when we saw a mulie doe being followed by a mulie spike buck. (Whitetail tags in my pocket )
Great to be out to see what nature can offer you though if you're patient enough...a couple of grey owls as well as a snowy owl. (He looked outta place in white plumage when theres no snow.) Spotted another coyote (that ran away to the next province before he stopped it seemed) A red fox in a field doing nothing but standing there.
Then, with about an hour and a half left in the day we started spotting deer, LOTS of deer. Mulie after mulie...in two cases herds of them. A monster mulie buck was awesome to see. He had a huge rack on him, and he wasn't worried about us at all....just sauntered off into the bush as calm as you please. Came across a whitetail buck that rocketed away into thick bush offering NO chance of a shot at all. The last three deer we saw was with about 3 minutes left in the day. And with the clouds covering the sun, the light was very minimal. Turned out to be 2 mulie does and one whitetail doe. The only way we determined it was a whitetail was when it started jogging away and that flag like tail was wagging back and forth at us. It was just too dark and too close to the end of the day so we let her go.
Another great day...but no meat in the freezer.
....Next time.

I missed posting about the last day we went out on....Wed Nov 11th was a day to remember our fallen service men and women...it was also the day I nailed the first doe since I hunted in Ontario back in `91. A smallish Whitetail about 140 lbs.

Now fast forward to today. Nailed another Whitetail doe and this one was a fat one. Maybe around 180 lbs or more. Still got one more tag so...going back out next Sunday.

My damn camera batteries died today after taking one picture so theres no deer pic unless IceHunter or Grizzaxeman posts one for me that they took.

Heres the picture of my wednesday deer...

Yep. Hunting is a great spectator sport! But I'm the type of guy who'd rather be n the field playing than watching from the stands. Next year I tell ya! NEXT YEAR!

Saw a lot more whitetails today...but damnit they move like rockets when you try to line `em up. Or, they just lope away when the slash and underscrub is so thick all you see is the white of the tail as they saunder off.
Oh well...gonna try one more weekend.
Had a real good chance at one...only to have her take off to the right when I went to the left to go around a huge bush. zig vs zag.

Sigh....the stuff you see when you don't have a tag...a bull followed by the cow.
Would have been an easy 200 yrd shot, the bull just stood in the field til the cow came out.

Well today was the last day I am going out this season. And wouldn't you know it....my best chance on a whitetail buck and I EPICLY FAILED!!!
I humped in about 150 yrds and this bugger came around the corner of a bush plot....we stood there looking at each other. Standing freehand, I lifted my Savage 12FV Varmint .308 (14ish lbs) So here I am winded from hustling in, hearts racing, puffing like a steam train, trying to hold zero on a buck about a 100 yrds away. Finally get the crosshairs on him and as I squeeze....the barrel wanders to the left about a foot clear of him.
BANG! GONE! CYA!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:
By the time he cleared the bush so I could see him, he was about 200 - 250 yrds away full tilt.
I have GOT to get into better shape for next year.

Thanks again Dennis
