First hunting shotgun

My main waterfowl gun is a Baikal MP153, the semi action really bleeds off some of that recoil from the 3.5 inch shells I use.

But in this case, I would suggest a Benelli Nova... Reason being is you want it for everything & I know that it has no issues with cycling any shells from 2.75 up to 3.5 inch. You can also pick them up in the EE for about $400...

I have since added a over/under to my hunting shotgun stable... A Beretta Perennia which will fill the role of my upland gun...

Cheers
Jay

Winchester SX3, Browning Silver, Franchi Affinity used Benelli's and Berettas if a semi is your plan
Remington 870 Wingmaster, Browning BPS or new manufacture Ithaca 37 if pumps are more your game.
If you want a double gun used may be your best bet, lots of Beretta, Browning and Winchester O/U's should be in this price range as well as some S/S.

If you have a grand to spend buy a sx3. Under 700 buy quality pump like a benelli super nova or bps pump. Buy once and buy quality.

Winchester SX3. I used mine for geese, ducks and turkey. Also shoot clays with it twice a week in the off season, Never had a jam or any other problem and its been through 4 years of hunting seasons. You can get them for around a grand new.

"...looking for a multi-purpose shotgun..." Look at a Mossberg M500 Combo in 12 ga. The combo parts means two barrels. Two bird barrels(24" and 28") w. changeable chokes and a 24" rifled deer barrel. Epp's want $468.75. Assuming you want a pump gun, of course.
Mossberg makes a semi-auto too. Model 930. Also comes in a combo package. One bird barrel w. changeable chokes and a deer barrel. I think both are drilled and tapped for scope mounts.
Mossbergs are high quality with a much more reasonable price than the Remingtons, et al.
